Reefer Madness, & more: Fri-Sat on TCM

Postby jeffbert » 17 years ago

2:00am Reefer Madness (1936)
See the laughable scare-tactics of the early 20 century, designed to discourage teens & young adults from trying the stuff.

3:15am Marihuana (1936)

4:30am Cocaine Fiends (1935)

TCM SCHEDULE
:D

Some may find drugs laughable....not so those of us who've lost family members because of them.

I did not say that drugs were laughable, only that the scare tactics in Reefer Madness were. Perhaps I should say that as I remember it, that film showed people going mad from just one joint. That & other extreme exaggerations was laughable.

I never lost anyone to drugs, so I really have difficulty identifying with your loss, but I have first hand experience in paying the price for childish behavior when I was only 3.

Mortality and other bad stuff from drug abuse may not be laughable, but most anti drug propaganda is, in a shamefully condescending way.

The war on drugs is just Prohibition 2.0, same abuse, same violence, same government payroll, same infantilizing of the individual and civil liberties.

The best prevention is education, and it's up to people to change their own bad behavior.
If they can't, and it hurts those who love them, then it's up to the 'hurtees' to remove themselves from that situation, painful as it is to see someone slowly kill his/herself.

I was astounded to see full nudity in Marihuana, especailly since this was made not long after the
Hayes Code was adopted by most theatres. It was around the time of Tarzan and His Mate, which had a scene with Jane skinnydipping that was cut after protests from religoius groups (see link). Anyway, both films had the scenes with nude women or a woman doing nothing more objectionable than simply being naked on screen. I do not know if the scenes in Marihuana were cut in the versions that actually were shown, but I suppose they were. :hyo:
