This explains things well too...

What I find most interesting is written at the top of the page.
Disney has a wonderful habit of resurrecting older stories/tales/myths/legends etc...I don't like disney that much, mainly because of their lack to produce completely original works.
Crazily enough, my parents labelled the Lion King a rip off when it was released...and if it weren't for them, I wouldn't of known Kimba so well =P

What I find weird is that the Lion King has made a lot more money than Kimba..If I worked for Disney I would feel bad for "borrowing" Tezuka Productions ideas.
I find it sober satisfaction to see Disney choking off it's own excessive megalomania. They had to close a ton of stores, close the Florida based animation department, the parks are outdated for their time, overgrown tourist traps, poisons to the residential areas where they sit. You could just sit back and laugh at Disney for their string of failed animations since the Lion King, in fact it seems they've had to fall back on that used up cash cow to suck more needed money.
No wonder why when Tezuka was aproached with offers for an amusement park he dismissed them as "gawdy glorifications to an oversized ego hunger." I'm glad I did grow up with Kimba and Astroboy and not that idiot mouse.
That said, I don't care if Disney did a rip off because Osamu Tezuka was by far a better man than Will "gerk the jerk" Eisner.

"You guys have some serious Mommy issues."
snopes disney legend page
This is a very interesting site that includes many of the rumours and stuff about disney.
Also what makes this all that much worse is the fact that Tezuka had a great level of respect for disney and his company.

The Lion King is NOT a rip-off of Kimba. So they have similar names. Big deal. The story is actually Shakespear's Hamlet.

In the article above, it stated that there were more reason then the similar names..oh well. Everyone has their own opinion.

I don't mean to be mean, but I have responses for this.
(1) orphaned lion cub destined to be king (Kimba/Simba);
Simba was not orphaned. He still had his mother.
(2) father who died in treacherous circumstances (Caesar/Mufasa);
Of course it was a treacherous circumstance. It would be a pretty boring movie if he just up and died.
(3) annoying busybody bird (Polly/Zazu);
We all need comic relief
(4) wise but eccentric baboon (Dan'l/Rafiki);
Okay. I don't have a responce for this one.-_-
(5) cute girlfriend cub (Kitty/Nala);
It's Disney. EVERYONE in Disney movies gets a girlfriend and unless you want to explain to you children how a lion and a bird had a cub, then I guess we're left with female lion
(6) villainous hyenas who are always trying to take over.
Dude, hyenas are evil. There's no denying this. Okay, not a good response, but it's true. Just look at them.
Anyway, I could believe if there was some minor inspiration from Kimba, but it's not a right out rip-off like others seem to say.

While I do agree that several similarities are coincidental because they are quite natural elements of the story, there are just too many similarities to pass this off as sheer coincidence. However, in regards to the 6 you cite above, I see only 3 that could pass as naturally inspired elements of the story. You are too quick to give a pass on the birds.
3) annoying busybody bird (Polly/Zazu);
We all need comic relief
is grasping at straws. While birds would likely be included in both stories, the role that these characters played was nearly identical. Moreover, while you do admit a similarity with the baboons, you fail to call it what it is: a rip-off. "Okay. I don't have a responce for this one" just does not do justice to it. Lastly, why would you suppose that
(6) villainous hyenas who are always trying to take over.
Dude, hyenas are evil. There's no denying this. Okay, not a good response, but it's true. Just look at them.
would be convincing? "Okay, not a good response" is your own admission that you failed to make your case on this one. Hyenas are scavengers, but they are not known for trying to take over anything but the unfortunate beast the Lions or other predators killed. Why do you assume this makes them naturals for the role they play in both series? Hence, for 3 out of 6 similarities, you make only lame or no excuses. But, there are more similarities than those found on the page you cited:
Lisa gave a link to a much more detailed page than the one you cite:

If you consider only those listed on http://www.kimbawlion.com/rant2.htm, you should certainly agree. Even disregarding these:

The 1st set,

3rd set,

& 9th set,
because they are too obviously natural elements in such stories, there are still 7 remaining, none of which could be said to be an element that by default, belongs in the story.
If you still do not agree that Lion King intentionally borrowed elements from Kimba, and that its makers obstinately denied any borrowing, it is because you are in denial because you simply cannot handle the truth.

I told my dad about this and he has a few things to say;
"I remember the Kimba opening episode. Kimba's father gets killed by poachers _not_ in a plot by his brother. Kimba and his mother get captured and put on board a ship to be sold to a zoo. Something happens to the ship, Kimba gets free but his mother can't, she pleads with her son to make his escape. He finally jumps overboard and swims back to shore. (I remember a musical number with him swimming and his mother's image appearing in the stars overhead) Upon returning to his home, I seem to remember Kimba trying to organize the animals into a government! (Hardly Disney's story.)
I've noticed that while this get _tons_ of coverage, nobody ever comments on the similarities between Aladdin and the old Sabu b&w fantasy movie (I think it was titled "The Prince Who Was A Thief" but I might be getting confused with a really bad color film with Tony Curtis!
