As I continue to watch this series (I've seen about 30+ episodes now), it becomes much more enigmatic.

I've finally gotten around to ordering the manga, and while I can't read japanese, I assume I'll at least be able to get some sense of the original storyline (I also have a few friends who are Japanese, so maybe I can get some assistance...) So I hope shortly I can say something more about Tezuka's original story, but that aside, I am amazed at how the series shifts back and forth between relatively innocuous (sp?) stories that seem geared toward little kids, and other episodes which feel more like animal versions of Grave of Fire Flies.

'Too Many Elephants' for instance not only features the destruction of an entire heard of elephants, but even when that is done, Tanaka (sp?) continues to try to machine gun down a mother and baby elephant she missed. Remorseless destruction comes up quite often, far more so than I'm sure NBC was quite comfortable with, though somehow they gloss over it.

I feel like what really sets Kimba apart so often isn't just that Kimba must demostrate strong moral character, but that this is never an easy choice. While other heroic cartoons also feature moralistic characters, Kimba is somehow different in part because he is unique--if he fails, his vision and his father's vsion fails forever. Even in western version it is impossible to escape the weight of Tezuka's original themes!

It is a real pity the manga still isn't available in English (nor do there seem to be any interested publishers). The best sense of what Tezuka had in mind is can probably be had from the Jungle Emperor Leo movie, but this is like reading the final chapter of a novel, and does miss quite a bit of what makes Kimba great. While I still wrestle with the dub at times (even though the voice acting itself is great), and the concessions that had to be made, there is nonetheless something very special about the original Kimba series.

Saw this set of dvds pointed out on the kimba forum: http://cgi.ebay.com/Anime-Jungle-Emperor-L...9QQcmdZViewItem

Like the rhino set, it is only half the series, and also, it is almost undoubtedly a bootled. After being spoiled by the Right Stuf/Madman box, this would be hard to watch, but note that this is the original Japanese version with subtitles...*sighs*

Just picked up the jungle emperor manga. Even not being able to read Japanese, I can still piece most of it together from background provided via the animated series (both of them) and the movie. This is great, great stuff, although I am imagining the manner in which Africans are portrayed here is what is holding back an English release. Ironically, the way they are drawn is lifted directly from the style Disney was using, but was subsequently edited to convey the spirit of the new PC Disney. Blah! Jungle Emperor is really too good to get held back by something like this.

I still have mixed feelings about the series. Sometimes it is great how something very small is expounded on and a genuine improvement is made upon the manga, where at other times, the episodes are just filler.

So right now I'd end up with a wish-list something like: complete animated jungle emperor SUBTITLED in english (mostly due to translation issues, not poor voice acting), and Jungle Emperor Leo manga in English. I'll probably never see either, but it would be a great day!

I would like to know if in the manga series, the cub does the heroic stuff as in the movie. Ie, directs the other animals to handle a crisis (as at the circus, when Lune took command during the fire). Pictures would be most welcome of that event.

I did an innitial scan of the comic and am now slowly 'rereading' it (if you can call it that), so I haven't read that section too closely, but there certainly is a point where Lune does direct the elephants during the fire and seems to save at least some lives.

I'm really hestitant to scan the comic because I don't want to bend up the binding, but I'll see what I can do later.

What is surprising is how much ISN'T in the comic--namely all the side characters. Bucky, Pauly, Kitty, Claw and Cassius are there, but many of the others are completely absent (like Daniel for instance, and the two hyennas.) On the other hand, the story arc with the humans is far more complete. The 'roger ranger' character (I really hate that name) starts out as a boy in the story, and by the end of the story arc, he is an adult and seemingly married to Mary/tanga. There's a much better explanation as to why Leo/Kimba is so willing to give his live to the Mustachio character (in the manga, 'pompous' or whatever you want to call him is one of his best friends.) Also, the events in the 'such sweet sorrow' portion feel a bit more natural than they do in Kimba when the emminant destruction of Kimba's kingdom just sort of 'pops up'.

In the end though, I find myself really attached to both mediums. They both have things I really like, and times where I'd rathre substitute one take than the other. The only real strike the series has against it is that inaccuracy in the english dub; but surprisingly, the series AS A WHOLE stays pretty true to the idea of the manga. And maybe that is surprising because with so much tampering, it was easy to conclude that Kimba might have little or nothing to do with Jungle Emperor at all.

Jungle Emperor is only 2 volumes (the whole affair is only a little over 500 pages! ;) The part where Lune directs the elephants is is in volume 2 near the end.

Once again, I'll try to get some scans up soon, but I'm right in the middle of crunch time with work.

Also, since it was the generosity of the fellow running the Kimba W. Lion page who gave me the links (and tips) for purchasing the manga off amazon.co.jp, I'll pass them on here:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/tg/det...1698654-6482736
http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4...1698654-6482736

I think what will be the toughest is trying to get through season 2--those DVDs are both nearly unlistenable and the dub itself is atrocious (what have they done to the soundtrack!!??)

Yup, in the edition I have, it is on p. 204 of volume 2.

I actually have made a really crappy scan, but just haven't had time to upload it.
