Son Goku is the Japanese pronounciation of Son Wukong (Chinese).

He's is the main character (sort of a monkey god) from Journey To The West, a famous Chinese story from about 400 years ago. Lots of variations have been made of the story, including Dragonball, Saiyuki, Tezuka's Alakazam the Great, and Monkey Magic. He's also appeared or mentioned in Naruto, Jackie Chan Adventures, Halo 1 and 2, DotA, and even as an Office XP Assistant.

I knew about Journey To The West, but not about all of the other stuff. Very interesting.
