Ended up renting and watching this - pretty cute movie. It may have been influenced by Astro Boy in a broad sense, but I didn't see any direct connections or anything.

Actually, in technical terms, D.A.R.Y.L. was more of a cyborg than a robot - his body was organic and only his mind was machine (though traditionally I think most think of cyborgs the other way around with the exception of The Terminator). It was also suggested he would age, which I guess would be a bit more like Jetter Mars from what I've read.

The one thing extremely similar that most mechanical life can't say is that both Astro and D.A.R.Y.L. were reared as children.
