You can load VMplayer for windows (it's free) and then install Linux under it to try it out. I have that combination at work to run Linux programs under Windows.
Linux actually runs better under VMplayer on windows than Windows does under Linux!
I'm not sure if that is because VMplayer itself works better on Windows than Linux, or if Linux runs better under virtual emulation than Windows though. Also, this is under two different computers, and VMplayer may be optimized for an Intel processor, which is what I have at work.

Hmm. Well I'm not as tech-savvy as you are (obviously
) so I'm not sure what that would or wouldn't do to what I already have installed on my computer. I have the video codec CCCP pack as well as some games and other free software that I wouldn't want to mess up with a switch like that or have to re-download and set back up.
But if this 8.1 is worse than what I already have (if I get it) I just may go ahead and do it anyway.
