No, it HAMMER; I think it is called THE REPTILE. Neither Cushing nor Lee are in it, but it is pretty good, even without them.

four Japanese horror stories

TV-14 horror
Kwaidan (1965)
Four stories mix love and the supernatural in exotic settings.

Dir: Masaki Kobayashi Cast: Rentaro Mikuni , Michiyo Aratama , Misako Watanabe .
C- 161 min, TV-14 CLOSE

I am sure I saw this a few years ago, as I usually watch TCM's foreign films, especially Japanese ones. I think I have seen 3 or 4 all together, I recall nothing about this one, other than that it was good. :d evil:

CYBOTRON:  Sorry I neglected to comment on Horror Castle, earlier. I do not recall that title, though I will watch it this year!

I almost died laughing when watching the 1st story on Twice-Told Tales! I was just a bit disappointed that the following stories lacked that type of ending.

:hyo:

ANYWAY, I SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS WEEK BY WEEK, so for this coming week:

TCM PRIMETIME - WHAT'S ON TONIGHT: FRIDAY NIGHT SPOTLIGHT:
8:00 PM 1381536000 horror
Horror of Dracula C- 81 min
TV-PG (1958)
The legendary count tries to turn his enemies' women into his bloodthirsty brides.

Dir: Terence Fisher Cast: Peter Cushing , Michael Gough , Melissa Stribling .
C- 81 min, TV-PG , CC CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Terence Fisher. Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Melissa Stribling, Michael Gough, Carol Marsh, John Van Eyssen, Valerie Gaunt, Miles Malleson. Probably Hammer Films' best shocker, a handsomely mounted retelling of the Stoker tale, with fantasy elements deemphasized. Lee is smooth as the Count, and Cushing perfect as tireless Professor Van Helsing. Script by Jimmy Sangster; full-blooded score by James Bernard. Released in Britain as DRACULA; followed by six sequels, the first of which was DRACULA--PRINCE OF DARKNESS.

Guests at a country estate share stories of the supernatural.

Dir: [Alberto] Cavalcanti Cast: Mervyn Johns , Roland Culver , Hartley Power .

Mervyn Johns, Roland Culver, Antony Baird, Judy Kelly, Miles Malleson, Sally Ann Howes, Googie Withers, Ralph Michael, Michael Redgrave, Basil Radford, Naunton Wayne, Frederick Valk. Classic chiller of gathering at a country house, where guests trade supernatural stories. One of them (Johns) has been having a nightmare that now seems to be coming true; final sequence with Redgrave as a schizophrenic ventriloquist is a knockout. U.S. theatrical version ran 77m.; complete edition has been restored for TV.

The skeleton of a murdered B girl is studied by Cape Cod cop Montalban and Harvard doctor Bennett in an early movie depiction of forensic science. Intelligent, realistic mystery is well acted and engrossing, if slow paced.

An eminent doctor releases a dark force from within himself.

Dir: Terence Fisher Cast: Paul Massie , Dawn Addams , Christopher Lee .
C- 88 min, TV-PG CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Terence Fisher. Paul Massie, Dawn Addams, Christopher Lee, David Kossoff, Francis De Wolff, Norma Marla. Uneven, sometimes unintentionally funny reworking of Stevenson story stresses Mr. and Mrs. relationship, plus fact that doctor himself is a weakling (and Hyde is suave and handsome!). Unfortunately, dialogue and situations are boring. Look for Oliver Reed as a bouncer. Originally shown in U.S. as HOUSE OF FRIGHT. Megascope.

It Came From Outer Space (1953)
No one believes an amateur astronomer's spaceship sighting until the town's people begin disappearing.

Dir: Jack Arnold Cast: Richard Carlson , Barbara Rush , Charles Drake .
80 min, TV-G CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Jack Arnold. Richard Carlson, Barbara Rush, Charles Drake, Russell Johnson, Joe Sawyer, Kathleen Hughes. Intriguing science-fiction based on a Ray Bradbury story. An alien ship crashes in the Arizona desert; its passengers assume the identities of nearby townspeople so they can effect repairs unnoticed--they think. Remarkably sober for its era, with crisp performances and real restraint, even in its use of 3-D. The 1996 TV movie IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE II is a much inferior remake, rather than the sequel the title suggests.

6:00 PM 95 min, TV-PG horror
World, The Flesh, And The Devil, The (1959)
One woman and two men are the only people left alive after a nuclear disaster.

Dir: Ranald MacDougall Cast: Harry Belafonte , Inger Stevens , Mel Ferrer .
95 min, TV-PG , CC CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Ranald MacDougall. Harry Belafonte, Inger Stevens, Mel Ferrer. Belafonte and Stevens are only survivors of worldwide nuclear accident; their uneasy relationship is jarred by arrival of Ferrer. Intriguing film starts well, bogs down halfway through, and presents ridiculous conclusion. Best scenes are at beginning, when Belafonte is alone in an impressively deserted Manhattan. CinemaScope.

I do not consider World, The Flesh, And The Devil to be a horror, though is is apocalyptic, because as I recall, it has no real horror elements. It does have conflict between the 2 men, competing for the 1 woman.

Nosferatu (1922)

In this silent film, a beautiful woman risks her life to end a vampire's plague of death and pestilence.

LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: F. W. Murnau. Max Schreck, Alexander Granach, Gustav von Wangenheim, Greta Schroeder. Early film version of Dracula is brilliantly eerie, full of imaginative touches that none of the later films quite recaptured. Schreck's vampire is also the ugliest in film history. The making of this film is dramatized in SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE. Remade in 1979.

Vampyr (1932)

LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: Carl Theodor Dreyer. Julian West (Baron Nicolas de Gunzburg), Sybille Schmitz, Maurice Schutz, Henriette Gerard. Dreyer's stylized use of light, shadow, and camera angles takes precedence over the plot in this chilling vampire-in-a-castle tale. Based on the novella Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu; filmed several times later. Originally made in French, German, and English versions.
