Lynny has sent me a tablet, and it's wonderful in the sense that it's a great layout. But she and I are both frustrated working with it. It's hard to select areas and change colors. I'd really like to try my hand at html. Does anyone know a really good site with html for beginners? And I mean REAL beginners...  :d oh:

Did you try the link I posted earlier?

It's too bad that the one I like most is in French. :shifty:

Do you talk about the code used in this forum for example to underline or put in bold? HTML is similar to this code. The code used here is called BB code. It uses brackets to designate styles, while HTML uses < and >.
For example, to underline you will type [ U ] underline [ /U ] (without the spaces). In HTML, the same code will be <U>underline</U> .
To learn it, follow the previous links, as said Astro Forever. But it is most probable that you don't really need knowing a lot in HTML, as there are many HTML editors out there, many of them are free. Today, only weirdos like me type all their HTML code by hand :whistling:

Well you do have to know something in HTML, IMO, even if that doesn't mean literally typing every single tag. It's easy to use an editor if you know what you are doing. It's much harder if you don't have a clue. You may still be able to create pages, but chances are it's not going to be exactly what you wanted and it's going to look like a disaster in other browsers or resolution. I've seen tons of beautiful, very artistics websites... that looked bad on my computer because the person who created it obviously thought that because it looked to him/her, it would look just the same to everyone! :whistling:

You already installed one, mr skunk. ;) It's Nvu. Dreamweaver is another, and there are many many others.

Wow, you got a tablet? :w00t: A graphics tablet!? :w00t: :w00t: You are so lucky! (okay, that's meant to be green with envy but I don't have anything closer :D )

Here's a HTML tutorial for real beginners:
http://www.ipl.org/div/kidsweb/
It's for kids, so I don't think it can get any more beginner than that. :)
Here's another good one:
http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_intro.asp

If you use Nvu, it's just a matter of changing the text and layout like you would in a word processor.

Actually, Lynny has found a nice one that's working great for us so far. Thanks for all your help guys! If I need anything else, I'll be sure to let you know. :) Also, I'll put up a link when the site is done.

Not exactly, although smileys constructed with a pair of colons ( : smiley : ) are beginning to be standard (but I am not sure it is exclusive to BB code) . Smileys such as : - ) go back a long time ago in the history of Internet. I had seen the "first" e-mail containing the first smiley, but I don't remember exactly how it was. For more imformation, have a look on the Wikipedia article on smileys.

HTML dates from around 1990. The first usage were very simple code that was easily readable. Today's HTML is very different, although globally compatible in the structure at least. Most modern pages are difficult to read for "normal" humans because generated by software, which allow more rich content (and therefore more complex code). For HTML, have a look on the Wikipedia article on HTML ( I'm surprised this linked haven't appeared somewhere already :p ) .
