I saw the 3 movies, although I didn't see the long versions.
As far as I am concerned I have a good impression. However, since I read the books 3 times I saw they skipped some parts

I have only seen the "theatrical" versions of the three movies. I saw them @ the theatre too, so I have a year in between them.
I fully intend at some point (the sooner the better) to aquire the extended versions of all three movies and watch them back to back.
Comparing them to the book I find the movies unquestionably superior in almost every significant way.
In fact I will actually go so far as to say I am astounded that such fantastic movies came from possibly the most boring and inconsistant book I have ever read.
Let the flame war begin. I am not afraid of you. *Puts on kevlar lined full body suit*

True the books can be boring especially the first one. The 2 first times I read the entire story I skipped a large half of the first book  Only the 3rd time I managed to actually read it all

However I don't remeber any inconsistencies... Do you have some examples?

There's this (contains coarse language).
Not exactly an inconsistency, but a bit of a plot hole.

Tolkien was awesome at world-building, not so great at telling a story. The Silmarillion's an even better example - one third of it is a glossary. Great if you want a fantasy history lesson, not so great if you just want a good read.
Personally, I liked the radio series of Lord of The Rings. It could just about pass as the movie audio track, and it was made in the 70s.
I saw the trilogy at a movie marathon, but they messed up the screening times because they accidentally showed the extended versions of the first two movies. Got out 12 hours later. It was epic, but I don't think I could do it again.

Wow!

However can't we say the Nazguls would have tried to stop the eagles?

I saw the last episode in a marathon too, it ended at 3AM  The funny thing is that right at the beginning of the last one (that nobody had seen yet), a technical incident occurred  Hopefully they managed to fix the problem in a few minutes, otherwise they would have faced the wrath of hundreds of fans :wahah:

Nah, they'd just been washed away. They didn't have dragons or whatever to fly on.[/b][/quote]
But they did starting from episode 2... Well I guess they would have been late for the party since the ring would have been "splashed" in episode 1

Well actually the movies have a few issues with them as well, but when you are watching it as an 11 hour movie, you don't think about them too much (though I still hate the whole 'Aragorn falling off a cliff' device they use that just seems a bit too contrived.)
The books, yeah, I can't really say anything bad about them except that I just don't like Tolkien's poetry very much, and there are places he goes on and on with it. And thank god they removed Tom Bombadill from the first film. It is a better film for it!
