It took me a few months to understand, but I think I finally got it. Please do not think I agree
Just imagine you are a DVDs distributor. You certainly won't distribute them in the whole world. You will have an assigned area, let's say Europe. The problem is that the one distributing in USA will often get the rights before you do, therefore people living in Europe will import DVDs from USA, draining your future sales The only way to allow you to have your full sales is to be sure people won't import DVDs from elsewhere, thus the region code
Of course this explaination is flawed because of region-free DVD readers But I think anyway the original idea didn't include such DVD readers, the present situation is probably some kind of archaism

Would be even better if they could get -all- the black jack comic out too (and of course, Jungle Emperor...*sigh*)
