A Month of Miyazaki
A Month of Miyazaki
At the moment (where i live) A month of Miyazaki has started on Cartoon Network's Toonami. This week they are showing one of my favorite movies, Spirited Away. In the upcoming weeks, they will also show my other favorites, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, and Castle in the Sky.

"Astro, you must exceed the limitations that humans cannot!
You must be go beyond nationality, ethnicity,
pilosophy, and religion,
starvation and poverty,
and war!
Exceed these limitations created by man!
You must fly high! Higher than any human has ever flown before!
To reach for the future that no human has been able to so far!"

Princess Mononoke was a great movie!
I agree with you guys about Porcco Rosso though, it is also great.
Here in the US I'm not sure if Howl's Moving Castle has come out yet. I didn't see it in theaters, so I'm excited.

It's out on DVD now! I bought it, but I haven't gotten a time to watch all of it.
I also read the original book (Howl's Moving Castle) and if you like to read, I think that it could be a good choice for books next time you find yourself needing a new novel! There are the usual book to screen changes, but that's only to be expected.

I have the book but don't want to spoil the movie. But if i watch the movie first I might not want to read the book.

Not to create contention. I think I've seen nearly every Ghibli film and been a fan since the mid 90's; but Mononoke is one of my absolute favorites. It is perhaps one of my all time favorite animated films and would go so far as talking about the film touching me spiritually.
But for every opinion there are others. I'd offer up Kiki's as my least favorite, followed by Spirited Away (which I loved at first, but then found it nearly collapsed under its own weight and sluggish pace.)
Howl's moving castle is something magnificient. Maybe one of Miyazaki's best. Also the recent reissue of Whisper of the Heart should not be ignored. A flawless masterpiece!
Bombs vs. bombs, missiles vs. missiles and now a new super weapon to throw upon us all!

I've never heard of this. I'll check it out.

Whisper of the heart isn't by Miyzaki, but rather by Yoshifumi Kondo who I understand died from Cancer shortly after the making of them film. It is incredibly unfortunate since this may be among one of my favorite ghibli films (a bit of a shock given that its plot is about an adolescent romance.)
Honestly, this is a ghibli film I was avoiding. The plot descriptions and the trailer left me baffled. Then when I finally saw it, I realized what an incredible film Kondo had made and that my preconceptions about what a film like this could be only betrayed my lack of imagination. Not to sound like a commercial, but Whisper of the Heart is an absolute triumph!
