Well I got my Astroboy collection today from right stuf, and I'm really excited. I'm also happy I did'nt have to buy it from "Madman...."
I'm going to have a marathon Astroboy nostalgia blast going through the gelatinous ball that passes for my brain all weekend!

The box and packaging are first rate. And there is of course a booklet with pictures and background info, and a synopsis of the episodes. The picture quality is very good but the sound on some episodes is not so good. The techs did the best they could since as you know the original masters were ordered destroyed. So far this expensive set,115.00 smackers plus shipping, seems worth the cost. I may well collect all the Astroboy collections I can find. :astro:

Off hand, I would say the two most messed-up stories were Episode 13: Deep Freeze & Episode 29: Memory Day (I used the data found on Wikopedia for the titles & #s because my desktop is off).

Watch for the characters Piper (Memory day) & Lady Bug (Deep Freeze). The English-language version makes Ladybug to be a robot resembling Sharky Dirk (Black Lux)'s mother, while it makes Piper a robot resembling Jiro, the boy who actually went time-travelling, & who was presumed dead. The Japanese have a festival every year commemorating the deceased. I can offer better data once I start my desktop, but the English-language version avoids the topic of death entirely. But Piper is Jiro just as Ladybug raised Sharky Dirk from infancy, & he believed she was his mother. :astro:

Gee. Thanks for the info. Do you have a link for that Japanese version with eyes of christ that you were talking about?

I only know of the 18 disc set (R #2), which runs about $190 + shipping (from Japan). I watch both E & J versions.

This has no subs. Is there an English dub on it? Is the episode I want on it?
The package is the same as the right stuf package!
Is it reliable to order from these guys?

Eyes is ep #13, #3 on disc 3. I have been fully satisfied with both sets that I have ordered, plus one other member has likewise been satisfied with all the DVDs he obtained via this source, & he has many boxed sets of Tezuka anime. It costs more to use the best shipping, but only that will allow package tracking with a set of this size. I was already spending $170, so another $35- $40 was not going to kill me.

There are more than a few episodes on this set that are absent from the NBC version. I, however, bought set 2 first because very few of its episodes had been included on NBC vers. However, if you want only the most important eps, check this thread: http://www.astroboy-online.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3333&highlight=roboids, however, Eyes is still only on the #1 set.

What about languages?
Without subs how does this work?

First, it helps that much of the story is conveyed visually; thus, even w/o understanding the language, one can most often understand the story. However, in 193 episodes, there were a few that stumped me. Tezuka often shows character's thoughts visually.

Second, it helps to have & have read all 23 volumes of the manga, as there were only a few stories in the series that were not based upon manga stories.

Third, you have an advantage over me, becuase I bought the 193 eps before TRSI released even the first DVD set. All I had were 36 eps on VHS, & the manga. Nevertheless, I was thrilled with the series. The humor is visual, so you need not understand the language to enjoy it. You will need a region 2 player, I use an external DVD drive connected through my USB2 port.

I just bought a region free universal DVD player.
A philips that does all regions and ntsc and pal, so I should be covered for any disk.
