to stop people from bumping up really old threads, why not just lock them?

I don't know what the other moderators think, so I'll speak only for myself here.

  • I do not have any problem with a new member bumping up two or three threads upon his arrival. It becomes a problem only when there are way too many old threads that are bumped up without significant posts inside.
I'll give an example: I've seen one person come here and bump up the Marine Express thread (a Tezuka movie) because it was something he was very interested in. That's how he found the forum, and he had something to say on the matter: that's fine, even if the topic was a few months old.

  • I've been here for two years now, and for the first year, the administrator was almost completely absent and there was no moderator at all. Still, we didn't have that much problems with this, maybe only with a thread or two once in a while. I do not want to prevent everybody from posting in every old thread just because once in two years, we may need to explain to one person what resurrecting an old thread is and why it can become a problem. It would penalize everybody. I'd rather rely on everybody's judgment than go with a formal procedure. I think it makes the forum more enjoyable.

  • There are more than two thousands threads on this forum. It would take a long time to lock them all. I would be willing to do it anyway if it was common to see members would bumping up tons of threads, but it's not the case.

"llama" wrote:as for the ones that are from 2 years ao or something,if they are considered extremely old, they should probably be deleted. like the idea?

Just the thought of this makes me    . Many of them still contain valuable information! You wouldn't believe how often I use the search engine to find old topics because there is something I want to read again, or because somebody asks a question and I (or somebody else) had posted a lot of information or pictures in a similar topic, not to mention that there are memorable threads, such as the one Jay Rath (Skunk's voice) posted in. It's hard to know in advance which threads will still be interesting in the future and which threads won't. We all have different interests and we can't know what may still interest us in the future.

When I take a look at the Currently Active Users once in a while, I see people browsing through many old threads. They don't post in them, but they do read them. When I first came here, I did that myself: I read many, many threads on the forum from 2005 back to 2003. I've seen other new members do it, too. And even though some of them made me smile, and if I had been around back then I would have written something in many of these threads, I refrained from posting in them and chose maybe 3 threads that were still in the first few pages to post in.

"llama" wrote:P.S. you can delete this thread when it receives more than 7 replies.
its just one of those threads. :)
No. ;) Even if I do not agree with your suggestion, it was a worthwile one anyway, and thus there's no reason to delete the thread. :)

"llama" wrote:what i mean is threads that have had no replies for more than three months since the last one should be deleted or put in an "old threads" section.
Well, we could do and old threads section, I guess, but I do not see it as a need since the date of the last post is clearly visible.

Why do you feel the need for such a section? Do you want a precise date, as in "No bump of threads in which the last post is older than XYZ"? We could make such a rule for you if it makes things more clear and help you feel comfortable and confident, but I personally do not want to set things in stones like that for everybody.

As for deleting topics, well I spoke about it above, and I do not see what else I could say. It's not because some information isn't valuable to you that it can't be valuable to others.

"llama" wrote:anyway was a weird suggestion. remember i used to be a moderator on another forum, so the effects of being at the top of the food chain are still wearing off.
Being at the top of the food chain...? You and I seem to have a different view of what a moderator is. ;) I personally see myself just like a regular member. Most of the time, I just forget that I'm a moderator. The only difference is that if there is a problem, I happen to have the means to solve it, but it's nothing more than that. I'm certainly not here to eat anybody. :D In fact, of the few forums I visit on a regular basis, there is none on which I would even want to be a moderator on. This one is the exception, and in fact, I'm glad I can help! :)

It was probably in relation to my previous post, in which I talked about being a moderator here, after you had said that you used to be a moderator.
