Before the space age, people could believe that Mars was inhabited by intelligent beings. In fact when the war of the worlds was broadcast as a radio drama, despite the fact that they occasionally broke for advertisements and indicated that it was just a radio drama, more than a few people thought the Martians really were invading.

But now, our eyes are open, and we know that Mars is devoid of life, as are all the other planets in our system. The distance to the next nearest one is just too far to make it plausible that we will ever be visited by aliens.

But that does not stop me from adoring Lum-chan or any other cute aliens! Nor does it stop me from enjoying stories about al- er, extraterrestrials. :D

I too, enjoyed ET, but that fact has nothing to do with the plausibility of interstellar space travel. Our current science has no way to accomodate this other than multigenerational spscecraft, but who wants to spend an entire life from cradle to grave on a spaceship?

People who don't even know about anything else? What about people who would even ignore they are traveling because the knowledge would have been lost across generations? :p
