Speed Racer: The Beginning

I just finished the 1st disc, & I was really disappointed with this, Peter Fernandez not withstanding. It was even worse than Star Trek TNG trying to recapture the chemestry of the original. Not only were there all the characters in 2nd generations, but Spritle is the headmaster of the racing school, in which

  1. dirty tricks were now acceptable & common place
  2. instructors teach offensive as well as defensive driving
  3. the new 'Sparky' is a genius & has a robotic Chim-Chim
  4. The new Duggery is a girl, whose father financed the school, but is a villain; the main one
  5. The track has a virtual feature allowing it to create 'realist' & even dangerous obstacles
  6. The obstacles incuded predatory shark-like vehicles that messed with all the students' cars

I could continue, but tough. The only redeeming thing I saw was the extras that included comments from the cast, including PF. However, as a B-movie, you might enjoy this. I was surprised to see that it was a direct to DVD feature, running just over an hour.

It seemed like it drew inspiration not only from Speed Racer, but Death Race 2000, & several other sources. :hyo:

So, it was on TV? There were no episodes, it was just one 1:06 long program. It could have been 3 episodes, except that without the 2 openings & 2 closing credits as it was, if these were added, each episode would have been at least 23 minutes, which in our day is quite long.

Anyway, I realize that young people who had not already seen the original, might like this show; I speak only for myself when I critique it. :p
