I just kind of heard about this show (I know I was under a rock), to tell you all the truth I'm mostly interested in Astro Boy and none of Osamu Tezuka's other works. This looks like quite possible the cutest thing ever since Astro Boy

. Is it possible to watch these in English or if not English subtitles?

Yxuz uploaded the whole series onto Youtube with Chinese subtitles, but that's the closest thing possible.

Was this series Chinese only?

No, it's still in all-Japanese, but the uploads' subtitles aren't.
The first episode is here, if you still want to see it.

Do you think the Japanese box set if one exists, has ENG subtitles?

One of those punk boys in that clip is almost certainly a youthful version of Skunk! :d evil:

Sorry I wouldn't imagine so. Perhaps it might. But as I understand most DVDs in Japan don't bother to include subs.
Maybe one day they will though, if they think they could expand their profits to people interested in english speaking countries.

@Mighty Astro: Toei Animation used to offer that sort of thing with exclusive
Dr. Slump VHS tapes, but they were hard to obtain and some things weren't subtitled (i.e., one scene where Taro insults someone).
@Jeffbert: I thought that too, but Skunk is in the show much later on. He lives in the forest and adopts Melmo, and tries to learn about these ancient artifacts...
Video Proof! He appears until an episode later, and then gets dragged into some lava.
