Attention Austrailian members: know anything about Zebra Finches?

I notice quite a few of you are Aussies -- and I have had Zebra finches as pets for a long time.
They are native to Australia, and I've wondered what they are like in their "home world." It would be funny to learn they are birds you folks see "everywhere" -- and here in the US we sell them at pet shops! They are pretty feisty for such small birds, and look like they get into all kinds of mischief.
I hand-fed a few of them as babies, and they grew up to be the most amazing and charming little friends. I used to call them my "Disney birds" as they would hover in front of you, beeping away cheerfully (they make a "beep/meep" sound more than a "tweet") -- they're pretty darn smart - learn their names, come when called, beg for food, and bathe right in your cupped hands.
Are these little guys all over your country, or just the "outback?" Thanks! Now back to my other favorite flying thing -- Astro!
