3D at the Movies - Just added to make an extra $3?

This is quite the trend I have recently become aware of. Yes, yes - there have been quite the slew of movies releasing lately that are being presented in 3D (I still say Coraline started the trend. No one cared until it showed up). Sure, the added dimension does allow for some stunning visual effects, and it is a good excuse for theaters to jack up the ticket price by $3 or more.

But, is the 3D really important to the movie? I'm not asking this as a critic, but as someone who has noticed that many of the movies that are released in theaters in 3D do not make it to DVD with the same format.

Now, Coraline did. Mind you, it wasn't fantastic in 3D on the DVD, but the fact is that it was in 3D. What of the other movies released in 3D that only had their 2D counterparts released for home viewing?

Examples: Avatar, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Up, Ice Age 3, and the recent Clash of the Titans movie is sure to find itself in the 2D-only format on DVD. Possibly even How to Train Your Dragon.

Why is this? Is the 3D only added so that we will pay extra? Does the 3D really change how we see the movie anyway? Do you even notice it?

Sorry, this kinda ended up as a borderline rant, hehe.

Ya I do see a some difference in 3D, saw a movie in 2D then in 3D and it was more visually pleasing. But that feeling might pass when everything is in 3D.
And on the 2D dvds, my brother has a program that makes things 3D. Don't know how it works but UP is looks good 3D.

Well I just got a Samsung 46 3D tv and blu ray 3D player. The only title out is "Monsters vs Aliens" but the 3D is faboo!
I guess all the 3D movies will be on blu ray. The shutter glasses are the best, though I have two blue red 3D titles.

I tried one of those 3D televisions out yesterday at Sears. It made my heart explode a little...it was a lot clearer than the 3D at the theaters...I wonder why?

But really, I wish the glasses were wireless...otherwise, it would be perfect.

Blu-Ray is overrated in my opinion. The quality doesn't seem any different to me...do I need new glasses?

Also, Monsters vs Aliens is such a sub-par movie. Why couldn't they bundle the 3D players with a good movie...like Up?

@LLM - I've heard of programs that do that. That's what they used to make Clash of the Titans 3D. Guess what movie I never saw? xD

I dunno, seeing it in IMAX made me a bit motion-sick. Although, I think Avatar did the same thing for me in 3D xP

@cybotron - Really? All the ones I've seen were wired...
