Here's something to think about:

If you eat a mermaid is that considered Cannibalism?

Is that meant to be a trick question?

No I was asked this and I didn't know what to say. I think it depends on which half you eat but I'm not sure.

Supposing a mermaid can exist, I think it depends on what you consider to be human or not. Do you consider the shape makes a creature human? If yes you should consider eating the "fish" half to avoid cannibalism. If you consider genetic material is what makes human, then it will be very difficult to consider since we don't even have a mermaid to do genetic analyzes on :p

Here is another question to ponder: if you consider the shape is important, then what about eating Siamese twins? Or what about polycephaly? There are many non-fatal genetic diseases that considerably alter the shape of a human, sometimes making him/her appear like a completely non-human monster. I don't put any links nor even names, as some images might be considered inappropriate for this forum, and I wouldn't want to give additional work to jeffbert :p

I would say the question is hard.
