Horse Problem

Postby Gotta Love ASTRO BOY » 14 years ago

I have a horse named Rio. He is my first horse I've onwed, but I have worked with horses before. This morning I went out to feed him and noticed that both sides of his stomache ,right before his hind legs, is swollen. My first thought was colic but he doesn't seem to be showing any signs of pain. He is not regecting food or water and he actually seems quite mello. Does anyone know what this might be. Thank you.

Okay thank you :D . Its really strange he seems to just want to eat. I tied his up so he would stop and he started eating the wood fence post. He isn't constipated so I really dont know why he is swelling. If he had just over eaten wouldn't it make sence that he would stop eating?

Perhaps a glutton? I will ask my friend who has a horse herself? The fact that he is eating is a good sign ( I think) but as I said, I know nothing about these beautiful creatures... You're lucky to have one!

Like I said I know nothing about this kinda thing but I would recommend keeping him away from grass if you can, this can cause gastric build up in the abdomen area that causes the sheath to swell. I would suggest you get an actual opinion from a veterinarian however.

Thats what I had come up with an option as too. He is starting to to get real anxious (like pawing on the ground and pulling) that may be pain or him justb wanting to get off the halter and lead. edit: he seems to have calmed down now that i walked him around

That's all I can come up with right now, maybe throw him some cat nip
Besides what I just told you I can't give any other advice. Hopefully it's something that simple for his and yours sake...
