Books from 30 Osamu Tezuka titles sent from Tezuka's childhood home

The southern Japanese city of Takarazuka announced that Tezuka Productions donated 870 Osamu Tezuka manga volumes which the city will deliver to the areas affected by the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake disaster (Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) of March 11. Before he became a pioneer in the manga world, Tezuka spent his early years in this city which now hosts the Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum.

Tezuka Production actually donated 920 volumes, including books from Phoenix, Black Jack, and about 30 other Tezuka titles. Takarazuka selected the 870 books that were aimed at children, and sent half to Ōfunato City in Iwate Prefecture and the other half to Sukagawa City in Fukushima Prefecture.

Takarazuka hopes that the books will reach the libraries of the local elementary schools. A city spokesperson noted, "We also experienced the Great Hanshin Earthquake (of 1995), so we can sympathize with the uneasy feelings that the children (in Ōfunato and Sukagawa) are going through. We want them to have some enjoyment with Tezuka manga."
