If you thought Final Fantasy was losing it's grip on telling a decent story, well this game kicks that fantasy finally out the window, because Enslaved Odyssey To The West, does it so well it is beyond any storytelling Sqaure Enix can even grasp other than fashion statement.
Enslaved: Odyssey to the west is a story set 150 years in the future where a global war has ravaged the Earth, destroying much of the human race and leaving the world to be plagued by robots left over from the conflict. The game opens with the main character, Monkey (Andy Serkis), awakening aboard a slave ship just as the vessel is about to crash. He and a woman named Trip (Lindsey Shaw) leave the ship via escape pod, but when he regains consciousness after a fall, he discovers that she has placed a slave headband on him, which forces him to follow her orders and that if Trip dies, so does Monkey. Trip explains that she wants to return to her village, which is 300 miles away, and that she needs his help to get there. Monkey is angry, but complies when he realizes that he has no choice.
Originally intended as a CGI film, Enslaved is based on the old story 'Odyssey to the west' that's seen many adaptations in the past (I think even Tezuka did one) but none like this one. This game was done by Ninja Theory, yes the same ones who gave Dante his new look (AAAAH!) but after seeing what Enslaved is like, I'm having second thoughts on the DMC reboot.
Anyway I mentioned Enslaved was originally supposed to be a film correct? Likely it would've been if Hollywood hadn't turned it down for the dumbest of reasons (they can turn down something so epic yep they vomit out all these lousy sequels to crummy films? =_=). Because of this Enslaved: Odyssey to the West still retains that movie element, that crosses over extremely well into the gaming world...that I actually believe all games should be done in this way.
Not to mention every cutscene is done with motion capture (meaning actors did the motions and voice acting as you can see here) and with detail facial expressions that really breaths life into the characters.
You can see what I mean by this with this scene that also lays out the plot:
To be honest I've not played this game (don't have a PS3 or Xbox360 lol) but I stilll recommend it, even just to watch the playthroughs for the cutscenes because the story is so absorbing you'll wish that it was a movie!
So please, if you don't already know about Enslaved: Odyssey to the West please oh please go check it out. You will NOT regret it!

And well done for reading all that, you earn a pigsy
