Youtube-videos featuring Osamu Tezuka

Postby Strange Wings » 12 years ago

Hey all!

Here are a couple of youtube-videos featuring Osamu Tezuka. Unfortunately they're all in Japanese only, nonetheless I thought they were intriguing to watch even for people unexperienced with the language.

Osamu Tezuka #1
At the start of this video Tezuka plays the Astro Boy opening theme on the piano, and at 2:05 he completes the drawing of a woman by adding a ..........! :D
Further into the video he talks about his hometown Osaka, where he grew up and went to school.

Osamu Tezuka #2
Here he can be seen strolling through the streets of Takarazuka, his city of birth, together with an interviewer.
As far as I was able to pick up from the conversation, I believe the location at 3:41 is where he for the first time met the woman who eventually became his wife. It was at a Christmas party.

Osamu Tezuka #3
This is him inside a planetarium in Osaka, revealing how he got the idea for a robot character resembling a planetarium
projector.

Joseph Haydn - The Creation, "Stimmt An Die Saiten, Ergreift Die Leier" ("Seize The Lyre And Let Its Strings Resound")
I hope it's ok to post this one, too. No Tezuka appearing here, but since he used to be fond of classical music it may be not too far off. It's beautiful...

I saw a video on youtube awhile ago where Tezuka appeared on a Japanese TV show. He was interviewed and was introduced by Astro Boy super-imposed on the screen (blue/green screen chroma key). He talked about some of his characters and they had cels of them hanging. The show was put up in two or three parts. It was in Japanese and not sub'ed, but I could sorta figure out what was going on by his body language.

I also read the Astro Boy Essays - that was a great book. I want to get Helen McCarthy's book...

I'm looking forward to Jeffbert's book . . . Wouldn't it be cool if he was suddenly all over the Internet, with interviews, etc.!!

I hope Jeffbert post's a link to his book (where to get it) when it's out.
I've read the Astro Boy Essays, good book.

Ya you must find a copy of McCarthy's book. If I have any money left after my daughters are finished with college and the health to travel a bit I'd like to visit Japan and see the Tezuka Manga Museum. I almost feel like I've been there thanks to videos posted on the web (and McCarthy's book has photos of it as well). I understand there are other museums in Japan with Tezuka exhibits almost as good.

I'm sure jeffbert will be happy to share the good news with us! :D

I think I'm about to fall in love with Haydn. Beautiful, April!

As you guessed, I have never read any specific biography about Tezuka, however I do remember reading that he loved music very much. It really shows in the 1980 Astro Boy series, it is loaded with beautiful music. :D
