I borrowed the DVD from the Library and just finished it. Wow, this was a good Steampunk Anime! Lots of plot twist back and forth, there are really no good guys here, the British government is just as bad as the American consortium, both trying to steal the secret of the 'steam ball'.
In the end the son of the inventor flies to safety using a steam jet pack invented by his father. He's carrying the daughter of the consortium's leader in his arms looking all too much like Astro in flight!

The Anime was directed by Katsuhiro Otomo who also did Akira. I wonder if they had Astro in mind when they did that jet pack scene?

Great dub too, with Patrick Stewart doing the voice of the inventor's father. BTW, I could TOTALLY see Stewart voicing Dr. Tenma in an Astro remake!
