Melmo attempts to soothe her brother's longing for mama by becoming big.
But Totoo knows this is not his mother.
The gang leader is Shogo; he falls for adult Melmo.

Shogo's papa is a drunkard, who despises his son's desire for education.
Melmo apparently acts as her own kid sister.

It seems like Shogo really wants Melmo as a mother.
Shogo works so much, he becomes ill; this actually brings his parents together, who had been estranged from one another.
The family that had been split apart because of papa's drunkenness, has now become reunited because of Shogo's illness.
