Impromptu Skype Meeting Test Runs

Postby Shiyonasan » 10 years ago

Anybody up for a test run of the Impromptu Skype Meeting today?

As I mentioned in the November 2014 Skype Meeting thread, I thought about doing Skype Meetings without the voting process involved. I came up with the name "Impromptu Skype Meeting" and brought it up in the aforementioned thread. A fellow member suggested doing a test run of it to see how successful it would be. I thought that was a good idea, and wanted to do one before the end of the year. That's where this thread comes in.

Since this is on a weekday, I've decided to possibly do a test run on Saturday or Sunday as well, since I know weekdays are inconvenient for a lot of people. Since Christmas is coming up though, a lot of people might be off from work and school. Also, I figured it wouldn't hurt to try holding a Skype Meeting on a weekday, just to see how successful it is.

Anyway, if I already have your Skype name in my contacts, just send me a message on Skype and I'll add you in. Otherwise, send me a PM with your Skype name and I'll get you set up to participate.

I only plan on doing this test run for 3 hours. However, I might extend it by an hour if someone joins late or if people are still deep into conversation.

All the same rules for the normal Skype Meetings still apply, with the exception of the voting rules since Impromptu Skype Meetings will not have a voting process. Please read over the rules before participating.

In addition, I added a few rules for all future Skype Meetings. Read over this post to see the additional rules.

NO BACKGROUND NOISE IS ALLOWED. You'll be given 1 second-chance in order to get rid of it if you have background noise on your end of the call. Failure to eliminate the background noise will result in getting dropped from the call. Very minimal background noise is okay. I just don't want the background noise to drown out people's voices.

If you have any further questions, ask them in this thread or in the Skype Meeting. Can't wait to talk to you all again! :)

The first Impromptu Skype Meeting Test Run will start a few minutes after this thread is posted.

EDIT: Don't forget that we're only doing voice chat. Also, the test run has just begun! We're going to go until 7:20 PM Eastern Time.

...and that's a wrap! I'm surprised that five of us we're able to get together; I was thinking that no one was going to show up! :p We were even able to get someone new into the call this time!

I would say this was a success today! Perhaps I'll consider doing more midweek Impromptu Skype Meetings in the future if personal circumstances allow for it. There will be one more test run of the Impromptu Skype Meeting either this weekend or next weekend. The next traditional Skype Meeting cannot happen until at least the end of February.

Anyway, thanks to all four of you who showed up today! It was fun talking to you all! I'm glad Skype didn't crash this time.

It was lots of fun and a success! Too bad I had to duck out early.

Second, and final test run of the impromptu Skype meeting is complete! Only me, Tetsuwan Atom, and EyeOdyssey participated, but it was fun nonetheless. Lots of laughs were had.

I'd say this was a success too. Sure, only three of us participated, but one main aspect of the impromptu Skype meetings is that they are expected to have lower attendance than the traditional Skype meetings because they do occur in such short notice.

Anyway, the test runs are complete! I shall do impromptu Skype meetings again sometime in the future, but probably not for a while. The next meeting will likely be a traditional Skype meeting with the voting process we're all familiar with. Due to the rules I set in place for these meetings, it cannot occur until at least late February. So, I'll talk to you guys then! :)

And today's impromptu Skype meeting is over. It was great to chat and talk with Astro Forever, Fafner, EyeOdyssey, and Earthshine again! We even got to ring in the new year with Fafner, as we could hear fireworks going off in the background of his end of the call!

Anyway, thanks to all who participated in the test runs and the first two official impromptu Skype meetings! It was an idea that I've had for a while, but Earthshine ultimately suggested to me to test out, and I think they're pretty successful and fun! There will still be traditional Skype meetings, but I'll have to do another impromptu Skype meeting sometime in 2015.

EDIT: After thinking it over, I've decided to close this thread to allow for each individual future impromptu Skype meeting to have its own thread. For now, I will deem this thread as the "Impromptu Skype Meeting Test Runs" thread since that's what it was originally called, and since that's what most of the meetings were in this thread.
