I must have been sleeping. I'm sure only Diehard67 cares about this but it seems Debian has finally released Jesse (Debian8.0). Good timing, I was going to install 'testing' on my spare box to use as a web server, now I will just put on the latest 'stable'.

I heard the Debian goes years on end between releases, they intend it to be ridiculously stable.
and I use ubuntu myself even on servers.

Debian does take a long time between releases, the last stable version was released about two years ago. They do update things for security and bug fixes continuously though. Considering the size of the distribution and the number of different platforms it runs on, a two year update cycle isn't that bad. Microsoft goes longer between new versions of windows.
You CAN use Debian's 'testing' or 'unstable' branches if you want to have the latest versions of everything, though you might have to deal with 'breakages'. I've installed the 'testing' branch before, usually when I knew that it was 'frozen' and that a new stable release was only months away.
Right now I'm running Mint on my desktop, but I have another machine I plan on setting up as a web server, that will get the brand new Jessie Debian.
