it really depends on a person preferences.

i like them all but Tezuka's idea was for a nine year old (4th 5th grade) and i think they kept that image somewhat in 03 series and 80's not in 09 movie. Tesuka's idea was boys under the age of 12 to have a little boy and being a robotic hero which was both appealing to both sets.

Astro i think was a year older mentally and emotionally then Tobio was, why most likely becuase Astro's mind is a merge of more intelligent and logical mind and a mind of a nine year. thus we find that to compare Astro to Tobio, Astro is the more mature of the two. the 09 movie didn't go by anything, I'd rather pay to see a movie made in the Tesuka productions the I-magi (what ever the company's name is) becuase i would rather have it dubbed then what i saw.

2003 OF COURSE! *calms down* I think in the '03 series they drew Astro the best, was the '03 series computer animated?

To me, the manga, 60's, 80's and 03's versions were all ten times better than the film's.

Astronomical Girl basically said it all for me, and I agree with her.

Personality-wise, I like the manga's and 2003's the most, but I can probably relate to the manga more since I have actually read it the most. I also prefer how he was drawn in the manga and 03's as well.

2009 Astro, I don't like how he looks or acts. Astro will forever be a young robotic kid to me, and trying to make him seem older just won't work. Then again, there are a lot of things that I did not like about the film.

I didn't like how they made Elefun/O'shay look like a dwarf.
I didn't mind how Astro looked in the movie but I still perfer the anime appearance over the movie.

(Sorry to all the Americans on this site, I don't mean this post as racially offensive or anything, and of course not all Americans are like that)

I think America often believes that Computer Animated childrens' film is the answer but when you transfer manga (or anime) to computer animation it just doesn't work :( .

I agree, CGI isn't the answer. I know this might sound weird coming from an American and no offense to any others but the Japanese seem to be far better story tellers.

But when I look at Astro I don't really see an American or an Asian kid I just see the character Astro not a person by race (Same thing with most animated characters)

The reason why I'm saying this is because some people said that Astro looked more "Caucasian" in the movie which is kind of a weird thing to say. He does look more like an American cartoon than an anime character definitely if that's what most people meant. Which they probably did.
