You wanted to see me Dr. Elefun?
It was the night of Christmas Eve when the little boy wonder, Astro, was woken from his slumber by his concerned robot parents. He had gotten a call from his surrogate father, asking for him to come down to the Ministry of Science ASAP.
Worried that something catastrophic was about to unfold, Astro had plugged in a new energy cassette, as his previous one was not yet done charging, and took off into the city sky with the voice of his father still ringing in his sensitive ears for having nearly used the patio window as an emergency exit, again. Astro was certain he would be scolded on his return, but for the time being he couldn't focus on that outcome, but rather what Dr. Elefun urgently needed his help with.
Whatever was wrong, he hoped it wasnt to do with the snow wreaking havoc on robots energy supplies again. The snow was coming down in thick clusters tonight, so he really didnt want a repeat of those events, or it was already too late.
Suddenly, Astro wished hed brought his umbrella.
However upon arrival at the Ministry, there was no chaos or panic to be found. The building was desolate, which wasnt an abnormal occurrence for not many worked the night shift before Christmas, all for the exceptions of the robot security guards out front, and the receptionist to welcome him at the front desk. But he passed very few employers on his trip up to the top floor, for what would've usually been a dodging game for the little robot.
When Astro did at last reach Dr. Elefun in the head office, the sight of the man differed too from what he'd anticipated.
He was smiling.
Yes, Im sorry to bring you here at this hour, but it's rather urgent.
Whats wrong? Is the city in trouble? Did I do something wrong? Astro asked speedily, buzzing with an electric rush of adrenaline, that the cooling rockets in his legs still felt hot like magma from flying so fast.
No, not at all my boy! Dr. Elefun laughed as he moved away from the window whered been watching the snowfall previously. Lightly he rested a hand on robots shoulder, putting him at ease, There's nothing for you to worry about, the city is safe.
Although it was physically impossible for Astro to do so, he gave a breathless sigh of relief, feeling as if a great burden of worries had been lifted from him.
But if theres no trouble, why did you call me out here? question the boy robot curiously as he gazed about the office, but the answer did not lye in eyes clear sight.
With a gentle push, Dr. Elefun escorted him to the door, Right of course Ill show you, come with me.
The walk through the Ministry building was one taken in utmost silence, something Astro wasnt used to. Whenever they had walked through these halls, come rain or shine, his foster father would discuss the main agenda of an upcoming mission or even the simplest of casual conversation. Though now as Astro peered up at Elefun, moving just single stride ahead, he saw that his face spoke for him.
Something had his foster father bubbling with excitement, he was sure of it. However when Astro did finally pluck up the courage to ask, the only answer he received was:
Youll see.
It didnt take long for them to reach their destination. Dr. Elefun had led him to one of the laboratories where robots were constructed. In fact, a quick scan back through his first memories of life clarified this was the very room he was born in.
This only made Astro more confused, if not a little worried.
What are we doing here?
To meet someone, very special Dr. Elefun replied with a growing smile, that he tried and failed at concealing, as if that alone might give the game away.
Briefly Astros eyes grew wide, thinking he was referring to his creator, Dr. Boynton, for why else would he be brought here? Though of course, sadly, that could never be true.
Dr. Boynton was dead.
Someone special, but who?
To this, Dr. Elefun tapped his bulbous nose with a secret wink Ill just be going to get them, but first, I need for you to close your eyes.
Astro blinked, M-My eyes?
Yes its a surprise. I was going to postpone it until tomorrow, but I thought you had both waited long enough Dr. Elefun explained, leaving the poor robot even more lost than he already was. How could a person be a surprise? Unless the surprise was another sibling.
Somebody...had been waiting for him?
But before Astro had time to inquire further into this, Elefun motioned to him with a wave of his hand. Go on now, close your eyes.
Yes sir! He nodded timidly and did as he was told; shutting his eyes so only the low lights of the laboratory were visible through his lids.
Wait here until I return, I wont be long His foster father told him as he made his way to the automatic door. He paused in mid step. And remember Astro, dont open your eyes until I say.
Yes Dr. Elefun and with that, the boy robot was left alone.
It felt bizarre, standing there alone in the lab with his eyes closed, while he listened out to his quiet surroundings. There had been many incidents (mostly those from battle) when his body was so badly damaged or drained of energy, it made him incapable of moving. Not once in all his adventures had Astro remained so still voluntarily apart from when
Just pretend to be broken, Ill sneak you in.
An electric hum sounded as the door reopened. Astro listened nervously as Dr. Elefuns plodding steps entered the laboratory, and was joined by a smaller pair of feet. They werent heavy enough to be an adult, and their steps carried a faint click to their heels a girl?
Go on now, its alright Dr. Elefun whispered, yet it wasnt directed at Astro but to the third occupant in the room who was too shy to answer vocally. He waited and nothing happened
Dr. Elefun, can I open my eyes now? Astro asked anxiously, wondering if that might makes things a great deal easier, however, his foster father wouldnt reply. D-Dr. Elefun?
And then, after what seemed to be the longest pause of hesitation very, very timidly, a patter of feet begun walk towards him.
Step
step
step
Scrunching his eyelids tighter shut, Astros arms remained glued at his side with hands clenched so firmly in fists they could have crushed stone. He promised not to look, but he wanted to know, he desperately wanted to. He was scared that if he didnt soon, his energy cassette would burst.
Step
step
At last they came to stand before him, uttering not a single word as they studied him over in silent observation. Astro suppressed a whimper, unsure of what to expect. Good or bad, he certainly hadn't been expecting...what happened next.
He felt a pair of delicate hands reach out to grasp his own, prying his fingers loose from the fists they once formed, until they were gently held out in front of him, between them both. The touch of their hands...was so...where had he...
Astro?
And every circuit in his body sparked to life with energy when her soft voice called out his name. And in that very instance, Astros eyes snapped open and brown iriss met brown.
Astro, I love you so much
I love you too-
I love you too-
No force on heaven or earth, or the universe combine, couldve stopped the boy robot from throwing his arms around the golden haired girl, holding her so tightly in such a loving warm embrace, that neither one ever wanted to let go.
Nikki!

And hand in hand they walked
Through the winter snow
And kissed right beneath
The little mistletoe
And together they would be
Forever happily
With promises to say
"You are the love for me"

...Shmoo

When I was writing this, I tried to keep to the feel of the 80's anime with how they would speak and the character's personalities. I have to say I liked writing 80's Astro, with every adaption each is different and he's no exception (He's such a sweetheart you wanna adopt him! :cry

The idea of bringing Nikki back popped into my head ages ago, but I didn't feel it could go anywhere with it...until I got in the Christmas mood and thought I could do something with it. I always figured, If Nikki had designs much in likeness to Astro, then Elefun could have eventually rebuilt her. However...I think she might be wanting her legs back, or perhaps it'd be like a marriage oath where instead of wedding rings they wear each others legs. *sigh* young love.
But yes, if you were curious Elefun did rebuild her and finished her on Christmas Eve, thus giving Astro the best Christmas present he could ever ask for. And their bits of dialogue at the end are taken from what they say in the final episode before Nikki was dismantled, had to do it

The next one I'm doing is on the 2003 anime, hopefully, if I can write that as fast. I did this fic in one evening! o_o
