SAY HAS ANYBODY NOTICED:

Postby ASTROBUDDY » 14 years ago

I was on the Osamu Tezuka World website: tezukaosamu.net/en/ and noticed that the Astro Boy/TestuWan Atom series has been posted with synopses for all 50 episodes including Episode# 20, here titled, "Eternal Children", and not "Eternal Boy".

Just thought I'd let people know if they weren't already aware.

I  :astro: :D

Has this happened today?

And the English site makes a lot of translation errors. I'd rather just believe the title is Eternal Boy instead of Eternal Children.

No, it's been up for a least a few weeks that I know of. And the synopses are in perfect English. I believe "Eternal Children" is the better and more accurate title, especially if you read the synopsis.

[Also although the word shonen is in the original Japanese title, it could be translated as boy or boys or children depending on the context.]

No, they have made errors before.

Such as the time they mistranslated something as 'sink', I can't remember what it originally was though.

I must say I already knew about this, but thought it had been that way for a long time. Though the site does seem to have grown a lot, nearly everything is translated now.

I also agree that Eternal Children sounds more like what the title would've officially been translated to.
I'm on Twitter.

Yes it is true that the site has had errors in the past, but looking at the synopses of the Astro Boy/TetsuWan Atom series; these were in good English grammatically speaking and the translations are most accurate.

[As for the "sink" incident you mention, I spoke about that with Jeffbert in another thread. The word "nagashi" which can be translated as "sink" (or more exactly as "kitchen sink") was incorrectly used in the original translation of "Robotto Nagashi"! Sometimes translators may have knowledge of what a word is in another language, but sometimes they forget about what might be termed as idiomatic expressions especially when dealing with words or titles which are used as play-on words or titles. For ex. "Robotto Nagashi" was a play-on the term, "Toro Nagashi" which is the term for the floating of paper lanterns down a river in honor of the dearly departed. The story was a twist on the Bon festival which is a time used for honoring the deceased. In this case robots resembling lost ones were being sent floating down a river instead of paper lanterns, after the families of the dearly departed had commemorated the memory of their lost ones.]

Any way I still feel the site is worth looking at, as these will become the official titles used for when referring to these episodes.

Reading the summary, fine I agree that Eternal Children is a better title.

Edit: It's missing episode 50.

Okay, you got me! While it is not perfect, it still has a lot of useful info and its info will be regarded as the official source for Tezuka characters in anime and/or manga.

I am pleasantly surprised with not only this, but the many other anime that now have English pages.
