You know, it's really unfortunate that Astro Boy doesn't have a release of any of the three anime series with all of the episodes in Japanese with English subtitles. Most other anime have that option now, but Astro Boy just can't seem to get a good release with that option. If only a company like FUNimation or Manga Entertainment could release a DVD box set with the entirety of any of the three anime series with the Japanese language track with English subtitles. If only...

Well, Manga Entertainment did release the 1980 series like that, or almost, like I said. I think they did a really good job at it too, so I can only wonder why they didn't advertise a bit more the subtitling job they did like, oh I don't know, ON THE BOX? That's right, the box says the show is English-only, even though they spent all that time doing a great subtitle translation of almost every episode. In any case, I consider Manga Entertainment's work with this box set to be the one that treated Astro Boy with the most respect.

Like Dr. Jerk said, the 2003 series is owned by Sony, so our only hope to see a good translation of the second half would be fan subs at this point.

The 1963 series is currently owned by The Right Stuf for North American distribution, and I doubt they'll let it go any time soon. That series, along with Kimba, are their treasures. They worked really hard on finding English films of the episodes, even from fans, just so they could stitch everything up together, sometimes using Japanese transfers and mixing them with the audio data on the English films, and doing the necessary syncing. All out of the respect for the show too, as this was a very risky endeavor in terms of profits. I can only hope that eventually, they decide to release a version of the Japanese boxsets with English subtitles. Right Stuf's current box sets only include 4 Japanese episodes with subtitles, as bonus features. I'm guessing a full subbed release would be a commercial disaster, considering these sell mainly out of nostalgia. But maybe if they do an expensive limited-edition, released only through their own store, it could be profitable. I certainly suggest everyone to email them about this. I already have.

This video refuses to download properly It always starts alright but then it suddenly stops before it's finished and I end up with just the first 2 minutes. I've tried Clipnabber and kisstudou and neither of them work I've got everything else downloaded alright so I can't understand why this won't work

Like I said, when I searched for that box set on the internet, many places said it was only available in English. I suppose it's due to the fans of the English dub taking precedence over the original Japanese version. Still, you WOULD think that they would at least mention that that set has the Japanese tracks with English subs on the box.

Definitely considering purchasing that one, even though the first two episodes are missing (or rather, shortened and combined into one episode). 50 episodes in Japanese compared to 52 is not bad. You take what you can get.

Fan subs are better than nothing I guess. I love this anime so far from what I've seen of it (episodes 1-7 and 20). Even though the subs are bad on the ones I'm watching, I can still pretty much follow the basic plot of each episode.

Oh yes, I remember seeing those sets on Rightstuf.

I can definitely understand how much the English version of this show takes precedence over the original Japanese version. Never knew that about how these sets came to be, but that's quite an impressive feat that they did just to get the English version released. Nostalgia is a powerful force, especially for those people who grew up in many decades past.

As for a full-subbed release, I think that would be highly unlikely. If it was an expensive limited edition released only through their own store, it might be profitable, but I can only see it being one of those limited-time offer deals. Still, if that happened, I would definitely purchase that set.

That is true. And yeah, that is weird that the Manga Entertainment and Madman sets are almost identical to each other.

Is it just me, or do the Manga Entertainment DVDs seem to be of slightly lower quality than the Madman ones? Not bagging or nothing, but the Manga Entertainment ones are in those flimsy cases...I dunno, I was expecting something like the Super Mario Super Show ones in the accordion-like case...(although, the other set was like the Astroboy ones, also...I dunno...)

On to the 2003 series, as long as it's still up officially, I see no worries. (And the final episode still has the most views, lol...)

I own both Madman's and Manga's boxsets.

Madman's is a pretty big metal box with 11 DVDs in separate plastic cases, one DVD per case.

Manga's has four cases with two DVDs per case, into a cardboard box. I do like that it doesn't take as much space as Madman's, but it's probably a little bit more special to have a metal case instead of a cardboard box. It's not a super special presentation, though. But at least it's better than another anime I own, which looks like a book and is beautifully presented, but the DVDs keep falling and are not exactly fun to take out because there are two that overlap on each "page". I prefer a simpler and more practical presentation!

As for the DVDs themselves, the colors do not turn out exactly the same on both sets, but I've been told it was because Madman's was PAL and the other is NTSC.

I wouldn't doubt if different region DVDs had differences in color/picture. The Vampire Hunter D DVD is Region 2 and the contrast is lower with slightly lighter shadows (so the entire screen isn't black when he's in the cave, unlike the American version).
