Dir: Gordon Douglas Cast: James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, Joan Weldon. 93 min, TV-PG , CC CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Gordon Douglas. James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, Joan Weldon, James Arness, Onslow Stevens. First-rate '50s sci-fi about giant ant mutations running wild in the Southwest. Intelligent script (by Ted Sherdeman, from George Worthing Yates' story) extremely well directed, with memorable climax in L.A. sewers. Fess Parker has small but memorable role. Forrest Tucker, Gaby Andre, Martin Benson, Alec Mango, Wyndham Goldie, Hugh Latimer. Britain's only Giant Bug movie is talky tale of a mad scientist whose magnetism experiments punch a hole in the ionosphere, letting in cosmic rays which enlarge insects in the woods. Gleefully ghoulish at times. Original British title: THE STRANGE WORLD OF PLANET X.

Scientist Carroll's new growth formula works a little too well, and pretty soon there's a humongous spider chewing up the countryside. One of the best giant-insect films, with fast pacing, convincing special effects, and interesting subplot detailing formula's effect on humans. That's Clint Eastwood as the jet squadron leader in final sequence.

C-82 min, TV-PG , CC CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Irvin S. Yeaworth, Jr Steven McQueen, Aneta Corsaut, Earl Rowe, Olin Howlin. Endearingly campy classic of cheap '50s sci-fi has "Steven" (in his first starring role) leading teenagers into battle to save their small town from being swallowed up by giant glop of cherry Jell-O from outer space. Not really all that good, but how can you hate a film like this? (Especially when Burt Bacharach composed the title song.) Later redubbed for comic effect as BLOBERMOUTH. Sequel: BEWARE! THE BLOB. Kenneth Tobey, Margaret Sheridan, Robert Cornthwaite, Douglas Spencer, James Arness, Dewey Martin, William Self, George Fenneman. Classic blend of science-fiction and horror, loosely based on John W. The second spaceship to Mars heads for Earth with the sole survivor of the first expedition, accused of murdering his crewmates--but the real killer is a Martian monster (Ray "Crash'' Corrigan), which has crept aboard the returning ship. No, no such thing this time. I thought at 1st that this was all about giant things, but that seems true for only the 1st night. Anyway, TCM runs a month of Horror or should I say 'horror' every October, with Friday nights & Saturdays packed full of it, & last year ran 48 hours straight during the last 2 days.

Thanks, Jeffbert for letting everyone know about this great schedule of cult favorites airing on TCM. The Godzilla films I remember fondly watching as a kid either at the neighborhood theatre or on TV. While I do have some of these in my DVD collection it was still fun watching them again. I do think Robert whatshisname was a little off about the dubbing. The '60s Godzilla films had some of the best dubbing in the business. The dubbing was done by the professionals of Titan d/b/a Titra Studios which hired professional actors to do the dubbing and most of them had worked on Radio.

Any way I am looking forward to some of the others in the line up, especailly for those movies I missed as a youngster and/or have not seen in years. (Especially those I never got to see in color, because when they aired on TV back in my day I did not as yet have a color TV.)

Thank you again!

I  :astro:

The second installment of TCM's Drive-in Double Features has come and gone and I must say I enjoyed them immensely. A Mara Corday triple feature! She was one of the hottest actresses to appear in these films and she appears different in each one. First up, "Tarantula" w/ John Agar, then "The Black Scorpion" w/"Richard Denning and last (and maybe the least) "The Giant Claw" w/ Jeff Morrow! To think that people actually paid to see these movies.

[For those not in the know, Mara Corday was a model/actress who was also a Playmate. She married actor Richard Long of "Nanny and the Professor" and "The Big Valley" fame, had three children with him and stayed with him until his untimely death at age, 47 of cancer.]

[In the case of "The Giant Claw", this was obviously what drive-ins were all about. If this movie did not make you want to make out, instead of actually watching the film then I don't know what! That monster puppet used in the film has got to be the funniest monster effect ever made for a movie. Well no! It can not be funnier than the carpet monster of "The Creeping Terror", but close.]

Of course some of these movies did bring back some fond memories like, "The Cosmic Monster" which I remember was one of those movies shown here in New York on what was called "Million Dollar Movie" which played the same movie almost every day for a week. And I would sit in front of the TV every day and watch the same movie over and over or as many times as I could. Of course I would catch the movie at different points when I came in from playing outside. Yes fun times! But I have to say my favorite was "The Wasp Woman", an early Roger Corman quickie "classic" which starred another of those fifties starlets who met a tragic end. I am speaking of Susan Cabot. (Google her my friends and you will see what I mean.)

Any way I can't wait for this week's installment which will feature two of my all time favorite schlock sci-fi movies. "The Attack of the 50 Foot Woman" and "The Queen of Outer Space". Along with "The Manster", I have not seen these movies in years! Hope others of you will give these movies a chance especially if you have never seen them! Maybe sit with your parent who might relive a past memory while watching them.

I  :astro:
