What are your favorite Writers/Authors/Story tellers?

Postby Ghost » 14 years ago

The title is sort of explanatory, but this is something that I have been thinking a lot about.

Here is something that I wanted to talk about and ask everyone on here. Do you have a particular writer, producer, or even artist that you like besides Osamu Tezuka?

Now for me, one of the most brilliant writers I have ever come across is Alan Moore.
For those that don't know who he is behind masterpieces such as : The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, and From Hell.

This man is probably one of the most interesting people that I have read about. He is a British comic writer and has crafted some of the best stories I have ever seen. Moore has created interesting environments, with interesting characters, and an interesting story to go along with it. Moore is probably one of the best story tellers of this generation. He has a very brilliant mind and I think there should be more writers like him.

V for Vendetta I think was one of his best works. The story talks about a near-future Britain ruled by a Fascist government, and the only thing standing in it's way is one Anarchist. Here is an interview with Alan Moore where he talks about V for Vendetta.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX7ehbE1vc0

In this interview he expresses the characters on both sides. This is one of the reasons why I like this man's work, he does not make trivial stories. In that interview Moore stated that he didn't make both characters and say, "Here's V, he's an anarchist, he's the good guy. And here is the Fascist government, they are the bad guys." The reason behind that is because it is trivial and insulting to the reader/viewer.

Anyone who has at least seen the film of V for Vendetta, probably knows that this not the case. The main character who goes by the letter 'V' is not entirely a hero. He is more of a vengeful force then a hero. In some ways he is even a villain, but he's not truly evil. This is one of the reasons why V is such a brilliant character.

But back to the topic of Moore's plots and themes of his work:

I am not a fan of simple, generic plots. I'm into stories that make you think about it for a long time after experiencing it. This is one of the reasons why I'm not big into the plot of the American dubbed Astro Boy anime. They tried to take Tezuka's creation and make it like Cowboys and Indians when the brought it to North America. Not only do I think that is insulting to the viewers, but I think it's insulting to the creator as well. You are taking someone's original creation and making it something that it is not. That I think is wrong and is a spit to the face of the person who made the creation.

I also think this why he is not too enthusiastic about people making movies out of his work. (If you look at his Wikipedia there is a section about this.)

But anyways, I think that most people should look into Alan Moore's work. The man is simply brilliant and there need to be more writers like him now.

So I would like to hear from others:

Do you have a particular Artist/Writer/Author? Feel free to tell us about the writer, his/her work, the message behind it.

L.A Meyer. EPIC

Postby SpaceCookie » 14 years ago

Pinpointing who my favorite writer is out of all the books I've read was difficult. A little more difficult that I had originally thought. But upon thinking about it..I had to give that slot to L.A Meyer, writer of the "Bloody Jack" Series. So far there are eight books in the series, and all of them just absolutely wonderful. He's not one of those writer's who's capacity to tell a good story degrades with each sequel..he just gets better and better. His main character, a girl name Jacky Faber, starts off as just your run of the mill dirty, potty mouthed orphan living under a bridge, and because she's a girl...she really has no other prospects. Especially living in the 18nth century. Eventually though...she goes on to pose as a boy so she can go on board a British Naval ship. Things go on from there..and you can just imagine all of what she had to go through to keep anyone from finding out she was female. If I tried to explain much more about it I'd take up a crap load of space. lol So I'll cut it short by saying..if you're a history nerd like me...and you happen to like pirates and rags to riches stories..you'll love this. :) Sucks I couldn't find a good picture of the author. :/

I read very little fiction. I'd go with Alexandre Dumas; if the name doesn't ring a bell, all of you got to know at least some of his work one way or another, I'm sure. ;)

I've only ever heard the name referenced in the movie 'The Shawshank Redemption'

I don't really have one either, I read alot of True Crime and Psychology type stuff. If I had to chose one I guess I'd go with Stephen King (Post car crash, his style changed quite drastically after that).

Oh, I'm not surprised that people here may not know his name. But his work should be something else. The Three Musketeers? The Man in the Iron Mask? The Simpsons had a retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo, too.

I too, thoroughly enjoyed works by Dumas, Verne, Wells, & other authors of the classics. At this time, I am in the midst of a collection of short sci-fi stories by Fredrick Brown, whose most famous & influential work is ARENA, its plot has been adapted into many sci-fi TV shows, from THE OUTER LIMITS to SPACE 1999, & of course MIGHTY ATOM, not to mention STAR TREK.

BTW, there is a university web site that has a ton of them for online reading;
http://gutenberg.net.au/plusfifty-n-z.html has Verne, & Wells, & others. I myself just finished E. Rice Burroughs' Pellucidar (At the Earth's Core), Caspak (The Land that Time Forgot), Mars & Venus stories. :D :D

L.A. Meyer and Mario Puzo. The Last Don I think is better than The Godfather (though I love that one, too), and the Bloody Jack series is amazing.
"Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free."
-Jim Morrison

"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great ones make you feel that you, too, can become great."
-Mark Twain
