Phoenix

Postby Strange Wings » 13 years ago

I thought about this pretty long, but now I've decided to buy the first 2 volumes of Tezuka's Phoenix story from amazon.co.jp.
These are going to be the 3rd and 4th Mangas of Tezuka I own in Japanese, the other two being 'Atom Cat' and 'Paper Fortress'. I'm so looking forward to read those, although I know it's going to be a tough reading as I'm still studying the language (as I probably will for the next following 7 years).

The 'Phoenix'-theme always fascinated me, and actually being able to read Tezuka's lifework serves me with joy and gratitude.
To those already familiar with the story, please refrain from giving away any plot details. I'd like to thoroughly read each volume without any hurry. The purchase of any following volumes has to wait until the next months anyway, given the costly price of Japan imports.

Yeha Phoenix from the tezuka manga that i have read untill this point phoenix has the be my favourite it is without a doubt tezuka's life work one of those he wanted to read pepole that only liked/knew about his astro boy kind of stuff.

Another point while the English version might be sort of out of print it would defenitly be much cheaper to buy the French or Italian version instead of the japanese i know your trying to get into reading japanese and all but that might just my opinion.

That's a great suggestion, I didn't know there were also french and italian translations available. :) I'm quite good in reading french, so I know where I have to head for when I should lack enthusiasm for buying further Phoenix volumes in Japanese. Thanks!
My knowledge of italian is slight above zero, though. I like listening to people talking in italian, but I know just a couple of words - far from being enough for reading Manga stories of this kind.

I think that there are several UNITs of original Phoenix manga available at this time. I have received email ads from Amazon.jp.com about them.

I have just started reading my own Phoenix collection, as I am looking for themes also found in AB.

Yeah, there are quite a lot of various publishers to choose from. I myself went for the Kodansha version, which is the same publisher distributing 'Atom Cat' and 'Kami No Toride (paper fortress)'. I got accustomed to the convenient book layout while I read these, so I probably stick with the same publisher for the next couple of volumes.
Phoenix #11 & #12 seem to have gotten out of print however, they're available from retailers and 2nd hand providers only.

I thought that the 'Once Upon A Time Astro Boy Stories' are pretty reminiscent to the 'Phoenix'-theme (Astro getting thrown back in time, running out of energy, his future self getting born etc.).
