Astro's hair spikes

Postby Robin » 12 years ago

Did the series ever give a functional reason for Astro having spiked hair or was it just for looks?

I've never seen a reason given - although, when you see his blueprints, there ARE little doohickeys inside each of the points.

BTW Andrew . . . I certainly understand your mom saying don't post photos (she's right about that) = BUT . . . somebody COULD take a photo of you from behind = so we could still see your Astro spikes, but not your face, which is what people could recognize.

I've never seen a photo of someone actually mastering the true spikes ALTHOUGH I see more and more guys gelling their hair up to a spiky ridge. It's getting VERY VERY CLOSE TO ====> :astro: !

To screw with people's minds.
That's pretty much it.

As you begin to look through Tezuka's other works you'll see that a lot of his characters have some funky features for practically no reason.

Tezuka claimed that as a child his own hair stuck up in bunches sorta like that. Also whenever he used astro as a human member of his star system (at least twice in blackjack) and as Tobio, he drew him with the spikes subdued as hair tufts.

As a person with naturally curly hair, I can attest to his idea.

In fact, when I was "Astro's age" (10-ish), my curly hair was cut short, and in the mornings, my "bed head" look was pushed up to one side, and flattened out to the other. And yes, I used to laugh at my image in the mirror, thinking "looks like Astro Boy!"

Aww that's so cute April X3

Well, his hair being an inspiration makes sense.

In Futurama all robots had antenna on their heads.
