Actually, Fantasia was Disney's first disaster and pretty pathetic that it only caught up to the production cost when it became a focal movie for the hippy drug culture in the 1960's.
About Tezuka though, what a life span of influences...
...Militarism in the 30's.
...A World War.
...A split second choice that saved his life.
...The defeat and rebirth of his country.
...Occupation.
...The idealistic 1960's.
...television.
...A medical degree.
...a whole country calls you a living treasure.
And the best part...he wasn't spoiled by it all. Tezuka lived a good life and I think his creations echo his unspoiled open spirit. The effect he had both on the rebirth of the Japanese nation and animation in general was incredable. You tell me, when the Pope himself commissions a Budist to make bible teaching cartoons for children, is that not respect?
