But, On there front image page the Chinese and Japanese characters on the images I can see. OK, the first 2 complicated red characters above Astro are Traditional pre 1945 Japanese, same as Chinese, that say [b]Iron and Arm. put them together like that and they mean Mighty or Tetsuwan. The remaining 3 much simplier red charaters are post 1945 modern Japanese alphebetic characters that say A, to, and mu. So altogether they say Mighty Atom or Tetsuwan Atomu. Astro Boy

Of the other black characters on the botom right image near Astro's elbow, all I can translate is the character that has a vertical line through a square. It means middle or central. Sorry I can't help you more. I have a Chinese/Engligh dictionary and a Japanese/English dictionary and I learn more gradually. I also studied Chinese back in 1979 when I was 12 right after I saw Tezuka's Space Giants, and I had a friend from Taiwan help me. I simply checked out a book from the school library and learned every character in there including how to count to 10. Example 1 2 3 in Chinese is Ehh Err San, in Japanese it's Iche Ni San. It was a lot of fun. I hope to find another beginers book on Chinese and Japanese, and continue my training. I don't have time for a class though. [/b]

Hey all!

I recentely watched the Christmas ep. the Robot House again and decided it's now my favorite Christmas story. I'm definately going to watch it on xmas eve. and xmas day. It's one of the most perfect Astro episodes ever made with beautiful animation, and check out the 60's "mod" fashions that Astro and Uran wear, especially the coats they wear at the begining of the episode, very Beatlesque.

This is the only other xmas episode made for Astro, originaly broadcast in Japan on Dec. 26th 1964, the first being the Snow Lion(Dec. 1963), which was ok, but a bit to dark for a feel good Christmas story. Also the animation for the Robot House along with others from 64-66 were so much smoother and beautiful than some of the earlier eps.

Also while Astro is fighting some gangsters, check out Astro's devilish grin when he realizes that an object he's holding looks just like a giant golf club. FORE!

I love that grin! Also note that the bad guys' flying helicopter tank resembled an old boot & was powered by a wind-up key! I thought it was very cute the way the hero tried to stop this thing!

It is a shame that that manga-style humor was nearly absent in the 80s, and completely absent in 2003.

I miss the manga style humor too. It's good comic relief. The 80's and the current series still have the comic antics of Uran, who can always make me laugh and feel good , but some episodes are to dark and at times nightmareish, like the last few eps. of the new series, especially episodes 49 and 50, there're good but very dark with almost no comic relief. I kept wanting to see the gourd character or see an angry face drawn on Ochanomizu's nose or angry faced thought bubbles comming out of his head while arguing with Dr. Tenma.

I personally like the darker approach of the last eps of the new series, especially the last episode contains a very touchy moment which almost brought tears to my eyes .
Those scenes building up a nice contrast to Astro's cuteness.

Of course the unique Tezuka-humor was much more present in the 60's and 80's anime than it is in the new series, but a certain kind of humor still appears in several eps.
It may be not as light-hearted as it shows in the 60's series, more kinda 'hidden', but in some new series episodes still I've found some tongues planted very firmly in cheek.

Anyway, given the fact that Osamu wasn't around anymore to supervise the new series' production I think it turned out great.

I will tell you how: maximize the window size, so that the entire image is visable. Then simply press [Print Screen] button. Next, open an image editor program, create a blank page about 600x 800 pixels, paste the image & presto! There it is, in a graphic format, ready to save to your hard drive. Ok, you might need to crop the image, but that should be easy.

Its called ASCII and has been around longer than computers. there is also a slightly different form called ANSI which you may also want to look into.

I have loved ASCII artwork for as long as I can remember. The patience to work out how to do it (especially in the older days when it was all done in printing presses or manual typeriters) has always left me awe struck.

THis may not work, as this is the smallest one I have and it utilizes white space, but its worth giving it a try. If it does not work I will remove it later so the forums will not scroll so far. even tho its the smallest one I have, its still bretty large.

Well I just recieved my copy and I just watched it. And it was beautiful.
There were Christmas carols, Silent Night etc. Uran skipping along singing jingle bells. And a lullaby with mention of God. Christmas trees. Everything.
