Yes it is....
The Rabbit plague was bad enough.

Bush fires in southern Australia wipe out whole towns and kill 76 people, the worst death toll in the country's history.
The dream time. A nightmare.

It's hard to watch the reports without getting choked up. Hundred foot tall tornados of fire, massive walls of flame overtaking cars and tearing off house roofs, entire herds of cattle on fire.
It's now Australia's worst natural disaster, and the fires are still burning. 131 dead and they're expecting it to rise.

South Australia was mentioned on one of those BBC reports as one region afflicted by the fires, are there any near you, DrFrag?

The worst we've had here were two or three icestorms in a row, which resulted in about half of the province without power at one point, followed by extremely cold temperature, which was obviously dangerous since without power few people can manage to keep their house at a regular temperature.

There were some injuries and a few deaths but nothing close to what's happening in Australia. At least, we knew our homes would still stand up and eventually life would resume as usual within a few weeks.

I also thought of you, DrFrag, since I knew you were in the south. How are you doing? Even if you personally aren't physically affected, it must be terrible to watch your countrymen suffering.

I'm in suburban Adelaide, so I'm pretty safe. We only had a couple of big bushfires this side of the border and no one was killed.

It's scary enough when bushfires happen without the fatalities, because the same kind of bushland is found all over southern Australia. A lot of native flora here actually requires fire to germinate, so we've always been bushfire prone. The scope of what's happening now is really shocking.
