Fewer is used when the things are quantities that are specific. Less is used when no quantity is specified, or the quantity is 1.

Example:

No, I am not a grammar teacher. In fact, I received an 'f' on my first grammar exam. But that was because I could not diagram sentences. As far as grammar goes, though, I knows good grammar when I sees it. I had even deliberately used the worst possible grammar I could imagine, just to irk my mother. Since then, however, I have been improving myself as best I could, & grammar was one thing I knew I could improve. But more important than that, I chose to take a class in grammar as opposed to a class in speech. I just could not imagine myself standing in front of class doing anything but sweating and shaking from nervousness.
