The best example of Uran's unselfishness to her brother shows up in 'The Death Balloon
'. Here she provides some of her essential parts to Dr. Elefun for reparing Astro, being aware that she'll be out of order til she gets her replacement parts.
This scene affects me everytime.

Oh, I didn't mean that she was selfish. Only that at times, it would have make more sense to give her energy to her brother. :)

Yes, that episode is really sad. I'm not sure I would have wanted to go back to school after hearing Alvin and his classmates say what they said after all Astro had done for them. I'd have lose a lot of faith in humans too after being shot like that... I'd have run away to the crystal castle!

Another sad moment was when Elefun had to remove his energy cassette in Frankenstein... You see how much he doesn't want to do it.

As for Cobalt, I also thought he was always able to fly... the vertical way, that is. :D

What do you mean by "the vertical way"?

I think he was made by Ochanomizu because Astro wasn't available at some point, but that is what I read here... somebody else probably can tell you more, Big Astro Fan.

Actually this all brings up another question but maybe it deserves its own topic.

In 'Astroboy's first love' (the last episode of the 80's series), Astro makes a comment to the girl robot (can't remember her name) that essentially has his same design. Namely, he is surprised she can feel lonely because only very advanced robots (if any except for Astro) can experience this emotion. The thought in my mind was if Uran or his parents can feel the same emotions he can?

I also find it interesting that in the manga, there is a point where Astro is time traveling and all he can find are old robots that don't have free will, but he still feels more attachment to them than humans and talks about feeling lonely. This is kind of strange since Astro may really share more in common with humans than other robots (though it is hard to tell since just what robots are capable of doesn't seem consistant from story to story), but it is clear he feels much more affinity toward robots regardless.

I don't know, but as the creator of this topic, I say feel free to use it the way you want! :)

I'm sure Uran can, since she is just like Astro minus his powers. As for the parents, they do seem to worry about their children. Sometimes it almost looks like they are doing it because of how they were programmed (ex.: so what that the dog is gone, what's important is to say "Good morning!" first! ) but they definitely worry about Uran being kidnapped or Astro going to Peligro Island.

I also find it interesting that in the manga, there is a point where Astro is time traveling and all he can find are old robots that don't have free will, but he still feels more attachment to them than humans and talks about feeling lonely. I haven't read the mangas, but I feel that it's a lot more easier for Astro to understand robots than humans. Astro is constantly trying to adapt to humans, from learning how to flush a toilet :P to trying to find out what "dreaming" means to humans. The easy path would have been the one chosen by Atlas (the 80 series one, that is), who gave up early on humans and decided to live surrounded by robots. Astro keeps trying and is getting better and better at it, but he'll always remain a robot.

Well, just like someone "flies" when he/she's falling down :D .
Sorry about that, I know it's irreverent towards Astro's 'lost' brother.

Don't be sorry, I don't mind one bit. Anybody can hijack any topic I started: it doesn't matter as long as people are enjoying themselves. ;)

Anyway, I was asking because I wanted to understand what you said. Do you mean Cobalt had an habit of falling down?

No, not at all. What I meant was that Cobalt is susceptible to the earth's gravity as any other human being, apart from the protagonists in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. B)

This should answer your question. The following frames come from 83rd Episode: The Strange Bird, Garuda, which was 74. Dunder, Bird of Doom in the English translation.

Basically, the evil worshipper of Kali decides to have the best robot in the world (sound familiar?). He creates a robot bird that eventually attacks Uranium:

After Ochanomizu repairs her, she wants to fly, just like big brother Atom:

Finally, O cannot resist her tears, so he put jets in her legs, with this result:

Note that her jets eventually save Atom, when his are both broken after the robot bird attacks him. She dutifully sacrifices her newfound ability to her brother, as O uses her jets to repair Atom, who, eventually defeats Garuda.
