We just don't need them to repeat the same error all over again.
Keeping the original concept intact will be the best way to call new fans.
Mistakes like these should not be repeated.

And WHO would WANT to see a dead horse like that being revived all over again?
So instead of having something decent we'll always have a dub which is disrespectful to the original series.

By the way, I would like to see a new series which they make Atom more human than ever, like even the ability to eat and drink rather than open his chest area all the time.

It would be funny seeing him being able to apreciate food like any boy of his age could enjoy.

But, I still think that would be cool if he had memories of Tobio, so he could have some basis in his morals from what Tobio himself had experienced before dying.

I would not surprised if Dr. Tenma had rejected him due a way or another and got recasting as a antagonist of sorts.

But, for clothing...

Since Atom had Tobio memories, I wonder why he feel confortable to wander around in public, that's quite a contrast.

Specially with Uran being pretty modest in the 2003 series with her pretty modern outfit.

Yes, that attire is tradictional, but it feels awkward when Atom accidentally invade a party (after being knocked by a enemy) or chasing a criminal who is doing a robbery in a bank.

Although, he is classic for having that issue, there is still a lot of contrast.

I wonder how he could keep a wallet with money while his clothing is destroyed.

Hope they get a lot of character development for both Atom and Uran in a new series, so it may call a lot of people who will don't think the show is a rip-off from Rockman which is obviously not.

Don't you mean 2003 series and 1980 series?

Also, I would like to see more development in both Atom and Uran.
It would pretty cool to see Atom dealing with several issues about humanity like "cheating in sports" (but, something more serious than the issue of Kenichi in the 2003 series), his thoughts about brothers who hate each other (like brothers who are fighting for the family fortune) and as well brothers who bully their young siblings (perhaps Atom could teach what he learned when he got Uran as a sister).

As for Uran it would be good if she had adventures which she helped people alike and got many friends, while Atom was busy with dangerous missions.
So, we would not lose the sight of her when Atom was still being the major focus.

Guess these atributes could call the attention of new fans.

yeah exactly why are you being soooo negative, I maybe just a newby but I respect the way the made the cartoon in all the different series, let's dicuss the good things about the anime.

What I mean is that we really need a new dub which don't hid the original series concept and we don't need these mistakes repeating all over again and making new fans shy away from the show.

Don't you watched the original episodes in japanese of 2003 series which the episodes and characters are more endearing?

But I still wish to have more developtment for Atom's character, he doesn't got any concern about wearing more than his trunks while walking around with his friends, neither they had any comment about how he wander around, lol

I think it would be nice if Uran had mini adventures while not being able to join in Atom's own adventures which would too dangerous for her.

2. STAY ON TOPIC - this thread is about Astro's popularity, and has now fundamentally shifted directions, upsetting what was a very happy, enjoyable thread.

Toshio, we are all aware of your passionate feelings about the dubs - no one is asking you to like something you do not like. But you need to respect other people enjoying some of these other versions, and not denigrate them in front of the people who just wrote how much they enjoyed them.

You would serve your ideals better to encourage them in a friendly way to read/view the original Japanese because they might find it even better than what they've seen so far (and, in fact, they probably WOULD! :heart

Now, please, PLEASE, let's get back on topic:

I've loved Astro since 1963 - so it's 50 years of being a fangirl for meeeee!

He was my first crush and will be even when I'm a wrinkly old 95 year old lady!!!

And his popularity was definitely given a big boost by the 2003 anime (which is when this forum came into existance), and the 2009 movie. I'm hopeful that this year - as the 50th anniversary of the original anime - will give him another boost.

I really wish the series do not suffer from what they had to deal with the previous 2003 dub anymore.

I had cousins lauguing over about how the character sounded stupid and how the episodes were confusing, it was not the fault of the series, but the translation and distribution.

I only hope that old mistakes are not repeated again.
It's always good to open the door for the future, but if the future is bright and without conflicts, then the better.

I am a foreigner myself and many people here also have complaints about how anime is treated in America.

In several animes we keept the original language featured in signs with a small sub saying what they meant while most animes published in America got them edited or omitted.
Even the food and costumes were not censored.

I don't wish to happen what the 2003 suffered anymore.
I wish the series to be loved by everyone without having contrast with their original japanese versions.

I don't wish to have more conflicts about new people who misjudged the series due how american companies treated them.
A future which everyone can enjoy the series without looking down due the adaptation is what I wish to cheerish the most.

My ideal is a dub which will leave no regrets for possible new fans and no hatred.
A perfect dub with well made DVDs releases will made people give up of trying to get the original series through torrents.
So, we'll don't have to suffer what we had to deal.
If the dub was amazing, then we would not have to care about illegal translations or DVDs which don't have any extras.

A bright dub which is able to respect the original series is the best thing which we could get.
So, we would no longer have people bad mouthing America about how they treat Astro Boy.

I'll stop bashing the dub and their names, what matters for me is having more respect of the translation groups about the original japanese roots.

Otherwise, everything will repeat once again and we'll keep having more haters appearing, because they got misjudged by the lack of quality of a possible new dub.

Remember: If american distributors don't make a dub of Astro Boy which stay true with the original and don't deny the japanese roots, then all other countries outside Japan and most of Asia will suffer with the same bad quality.
We don't need it to happen anymore.

Guys, if I say that I hate the english dub and their puns then it's my opinion.
If I hate the idea of the series not being faithfull to the original and having a lot of endearing stuff omited, then it's my opinion.
It's harsh, but it's still my opinion.

If you say that I am just being negative, then you're saying that I have no right of expressing my opinion.

Please understand: the english dub adaptation CANNOT please everyone and specially those who live outside USA and are frustrated with the treatment given to the series.
Even a member of dA hated Uran because of the dub, but then again, it wasn't her fault.
The dub took the american version as basis and don't had dedication for the work.

The issue of pretending that a anime or even comic was made by americans is still a bad issue.
Even a very known brazilian artist lost interest of publishing his work in America, because an american company wanted to pretend that he was american.
That's what I heard from a english teacher who visited America sometime ago.
I'm not sure if it's true, but I would not surprised if it was.

Unfortunatelly, if a company like Sony work with Tezuka productions and decide to omit the original series in the DVDs and do the same work done in the 2003 series then more people like me will be displeased.

But, let's talk about good things:

By the way, we could try advertise the series in AMV, but we could have issues with copyright if the video was uploaded in youtube.
I'm not sure if viki would see with good eyes an AMV of the 1980 series, so be careful if you publish in youtube.

If you use a soundtrack like True Blue, then you may get a copyright warning depending of how the video was made.
If the copyright notice don't affect your account, then you may get advertising which can be annoying.

A good idea is giving links to the 1980 series in japanese which are broadcasted by Viki's channel in some anime forums.

I had recomended the 1980 series to a friend and he got pretty surprised about how it was different from the 2003 anime.

He also got surprised about the japanese version of the anime, because he thought that Atom was just a robot and not based in a boy who died.

But, it's not worthy to try give links to the 2003 japanese episodes from illegal sources, after all we would not be supporting the original creators.

Perhaps, we could recommend links from the original DVDs.

Also, I am not sure if recommending the 2003 dub will work out, there is a chance of a possible new fan reject it.

I was a teenager in Junior High when Astro first aired in 1963. I remember being bullied in school and daydreaming that I had a robot friend like Astro on my side. After the show went off the air I almost forgot about it. I had an uncle who worked for Panasonic as an importer-salesman. He made a few trips to Ōsaka, Japan and brought back some souvenirs including some manga books. That's when I found out that Astro Boy was actually from Japan and known there as 'Mighty Atom'.

I never did see the 1980 or 2003 versions of the anime, though I'm sure they were on TV in the US (maybe on cable which I DID have by then). Then one day I saw the coming attraction 'teaser' in the movie theater for the 2009 movie. It didn't take me very long into the thing to figure out what it was for, and that brought back memories!
I then wore Google, AltaVista, and Yahoo out searching for links. I found the old 1963 series posted up on youtube, and Hulu had the 1980 and 2003 series. I also found clips from Supercar and Fireball XL5 which really sent me back. Almost like falling into the DeLorean or Mr. Pebody's wayback machine. I then learned about Osmau Tezuka and have been looking on line for more of his manga and anime. The public library had some of the Black Horse books and I was able to borrow ALL of the VIZ Blackjack books on the inter-library loan system. So now not only have I rediscovered some great stuff from my childhood, but I've become a Manga fan, though I've mostly been reading Tezuka. I'd like to expand that but I'm not a martial arts fan and a lot of the recent manga seems to be of that theme. I did find some Star Trek graphic novels in Manga format. Interesting idea!

But back to Atom. My computer is now full of rotating back drops of various Astro Boy artwork downloaded from the web. (Also FBXL5, Supercar, and Futurama.) I also like Bender. I wonder if Matt Groening got drunk enough would he put Atom in a FR episode as a foil for Bender? I'm also working on my own SF stories with a form of Astro in them.

We "originals" have got to stick together!!

I loved Fireball XL5 and Supercar too . . . and I also was not aware of the other Astro Boy series in the US - although I did learn about the existence of the 80's anime from Todd Furman - the guy who actually started the Right Stuf. I read about him starting a business selling Astro Boy VHS tapes in the NY Times or Wall St. Jr. and (this was back in the late 80's) got his phone number from information (no Internet back then!) and called him up (he was in Iowa) - that's how excited I was to get reconnected to my childhood hero!

He was a great guy, and we talked for quite a while (back then, it was a LOT of money to call half-way across the country). I did order some of the tapes and an Episode Guide. He described how he (and Shawn, whose is now the "owner" of the company) started buying up and restoring all these old prints - it was incredible.

Did you know there are other Astro Boy movies, as well? Only released in Japan - some of them were on YouTube for a while, but the copyright issues became more serious, and most of that has been removed (and we no longer post links here). So glad you found this forum, and I look forward to your stories . . . I know that Groening put Bart Simpson in an Astro Boy costume in the opening of one of the Simpson's eps . . . so your idea for Bender might actually come through. Who knows . . .
