7]BATMAN, THE ANIMATED SERIES - The first versions shown originally on FOX are still the best after 12 years

8]THE SIMPSONS - I saw last night's episode, and I must say that 16 years hasn't dimmed their sharpness.

There are a few cartoons that I'm not quite sure if they're anime or not. I know The Simpsons isn't, but some cartoons like Batman, X-Men Evolution, TMNT (2003), Spiderman Unlimited, etc seem to be sort of in a middle ground. The animation quality is way better than your typical US production, but stylistically it doesn't really qualify as anime. They're also serialised.

Does anyone know which genre these fit into? Where are they being made?

Aeon Flux is another quirky one. I've heard it's Chinese and doesn't qualify as anime.

I must now make a few additions to my list:

  • Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. This seems to be a cross between FLCL and Excel Saga. I say that because it two main characters are a boy and girl who reminded me of similar characters in FLCL, and as far as Excel Saga goes, it is the same type of plot: anything can and does happen. Moreover it parodies English/Western things as well as Japanese. It like Excel, features AD-Vid notes to explain things that Western viewers might not 'get'.
  • Outlaw Star. I like all the charaters, but especailly Aisha the Ctarl-Ctarl. The series is adventurous and funny.
 :wahah:

Speaking of Aeon Flux.....Does anyone know more about the anime called The Maxx? It was shown on MTV somewhere in the year of '95, together with Aeon Flux.
Those series were part in a TV broadcast named as 'MTV's oddities'.
As far as I can remember, The Maxx was a big blue guy (monster/robot?), which seemed to protect a jungle queen or something like that. I don't remember the exactly storyline anymore.

 I'm not sure if this one counts as anime either.

I remember seeing THE MAXX, AEON FLUX, and most of the MTV animated programs, from LIQUID TELEVISION, to the two I mentioned, as well as watching those morons BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD quite religiously. They were not anime' but they were better and more entertaining than the dreck on Saturday Mornings seen on the networks.

The best one was AEON FLUX with its hyper-violence and sexuality. THE MAXX was too moody, and B&B was so stupid, it really turned out to be clever.

I wonder what MTV has up their sleeve when it comes to animation?

I bought a copy of Gunsmith Cats because I read about its story and extras. Too bad I was suckered into a bootleg that had no extras. The story itself was worthwhile, but I prefer funny titles:
  • 1. Colorful: my number one pick, it is rather risque, being about losers trying to sneak a peek at girls' panties, but it is absolutely the funniest thing I have ever seen, because of the consequnces and strained facial expressions as they try to stretch for the peek.

I could not order the following in terms of funniest to least funny.
  • 2. Fist of the North Star. extremely violent, but unbelievably b-movie-style of killing, I could not stop laughing, it was just too dumb.
  • 3. Mahoromatic. Funny and also fan service. Sexual fantasies are rather graphic, though.
  • 4. Nuku Nuku (OAV, not Dash) funny
  • 5. Tetsuwan Atumu (new (Japanese Language),old,  older, manga) funny because kids are so cute.
  • 6. Excel Saga. However, I must learn more about Japanese culture to undrestand Excel's puns.
  • 7. Martian Successor Nadesico/ and its spinoff, Gekiganger 3. The crew of the Nedesico enjoy watching the old anime, Gekiganger 3, and hence the spinoff. Quite funny! I will need to see if I should move this higher in the list, because it is quite funny.
  • 8. Photon is also quite funny, but does have some rather offensive sexual content, even though that particular part of the body is hidden behind a censor's black dot, I found the one scene rather gross.
  • 9. Dirty Pair/ Burn Up/ Plastic Little/ and others with goofy slapstick-style humor, massive destruction,  and fan-service.
  • 10. Wild Arms. It has the cutest little vampire I have ever seen!

I will post my favorite movies later.

OK, here are some more that I have only recently viewed:

Hellsing: very cool, not much humor, though.
Trigun: Very funny. Atom & Vash the Stampede share a common value for all human life. Both try to save everybody, including the bad guys.
Chobits: Persocoms can be very cute.
Outlaw Star: Love that Ctarl-Ctarl! :wahah: (I have not used wahah for a long time).
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi: Very cute, kids reminded me of the ones in FLCL, humor was like Excel Saga.
NUKU NUKU TV: "Grrr! Its Shirakaba! shi-ra-ka-ba!!" :D
Jungle Emperor Leo: The way Kimba TWL was meant to be.
Ruin Explorers: poor girl has a very unique curse. :P
The Big O: Cool stuff, reminds me of several American shows.

More to come--

interesting.... You made no mention of Wolf's Rain in your "Anime Critique." There would have been Cub Packs. The Hollywood Wolves would be milling about.

An Anime Star Chart @ any Astroboy sector of cyberspace that did not list Wolf's Rain would never be taken seriously among the Directors in the Tokyo Cartoonlands of Michiko.

And I was determined to be taken seriously by the Anime Directors of Michiko that monitored Astro Comm. B)

I have a Netflix membership. Netflix has hunderds of anime titles, many complete series  ; but some only the first few discs in a larger series. I must check other resources to make sure I do not start anything that is not completely available.

BTW, I updated my list. Newer entries are yellow text. :)

Mahoromatic (6 discs) had quite a bit of skin, most of it was non-sexual in context. However, as I noted, the female teacher has her heart set on 14 year-old Suguru, and her fantasies are unsuitable for kids. There is a Summer Special that is about Mahoro's quest to eliminate all of Suguru's porno mags. It is only about 30 minutes, but funny as he**.--Censored--

I have not seen Digimon 03 'tamers' or Spriggan, although the latter name seems familiar.

I just love Sakura's costumes! I must see more of the magic girl genre before I take another look at Pretty Sammy.
