Unfortunately it really isn't a very good godzilla movie. The previous one, Godzilla against MechaGodzilla is a MUCH MUCH better film. This one felt completely stagnant to me with no original ideas. Although I'm pained that the next Godzilla is going to be the last one (until they revive the franchise again), SOS made me think it was about time. Even 'Giant monsters all-out attack', which I really didn't care for at all since it strayed too much from the Godzilla motif (being done by the Gamera director) was still far more original and inventive than SOS. I know it is hard to NOT be excited by a new Godzilla movie, but this one is really very blah.

Here is a very positive review.... Whom do you believe? <_< :wahah:
Sadly.... Some just don't get it.
Here is a second positive review.....

And here is a third positive review from a guy who was there in Tokyo for the film...

It's really an inside sort of thing.... When Tokyo sends out an SOS I listen. Toooooo bad Japan was whipped by the Four winds to such a degree. These are the days of Heaven. And that's what happens when you muck over YOG. One flap of Mothras wings..... I ordered the DVD, it arrives Dec.14 in time for Xmas.
I have clips and from the ads i've seen,I can hardly wait. But there were those that did not like Astroboy.

Here is a Village Voice review

Well you don't have to make it my view versus these other reviewers. I'm normally one of the most positive G fans there is. I'm sure some people dig it, but for someone who loves about half the godzilla films (you can keep the 70's ones and space godzilla), this one was...well...boring. I'm glad you have so much enthusiasm, but there are a lot of G fans who have been dissapointed with SOS. Check it out, see what you think.
Edit: I suppose I ought to explain myself. I watched this with some other G fans, and we could predict every scene (at least when it came to monster fights) that was going to happen. At first I thought, 'wow, we really are fans', then I realized the film was just doing everything that had already been done before. non-fans will level this at all the films, but I think most of the G films have added something/tried something different. Most every wrestle hold, throw down, or whatever you can probably pin-point which movie they took it from. As usual, there has to be one big fight with Mothra, then a fight with the two grubs where they wrap him up in silk. MechaGodzilla is far less interesting than the last film, and since it is established that MechaG is G, there is something wrong when Godzilla is writing out messages on his computer screen to his pilots! I loved the plot in the previous one where MechaG and the pilot were both completely alienated from their former lives, and thus somehow bonded, but while that was done tactfully, this is just slopped together with far less interesting human characters, a pretty mundane plot and nothing original in the fights whatsoever (even the very ending is stolen pretty much direct from King Ghidora and the 90's G vs. Mothra.
I don't know much about the reviews or the reviewers you linked, but there are of course some G fans who will love every G film (including Son of Godzilla), and I'm not so far gone as to go that far, but from the perspective of a veteran fan I found this one dissapointing.

Oh, while I'm posting like a maniac on this thread, I should add the region 2 dvd has been out a bit. Unfortunately the anime store I picked it up from had cleverly made a bootleg of it--the thing looked absolutely real but was in fact a dvd-r. Actually a three disc set, two dvd-rs and a cd-r for the soundtrack. Its probably worth keeping an eye out for such imposters since the entire package was shrink wrapped and the artwork looked pro printed (though under closer inspection it wasn't). Why they were willing to go to so much effort is hard to say; but you can see how the whole thing was dissapointing for me. The entire package was a bootleg, and then I found the movie did not live up to its prequel. Blah!
Bombs vs. bombs, missiles vs. missiles and now a new super weapon to throw upon us all!
Well like I said, this goes far beyond what most people think. To them, it's just childish. Guy's in rubber suits, puppets on a string. But if you can dig it, this stuff is real.
If you know what you're watching, Godzilla is deeper than James Bond.

Well yes, I do dig the guys in rubber suits. G is a mythology--its why I love 54 so much because G is a lot more than just a big monster. He's something far more primal like a hurricane or a tsunami. As said, my evaluation of SOS isn't from the perspective of someone who doesn't dig G or suitmation or whatever. Yeah, I couldn't even share my enthusiasm when I picked up SOS with most of my friends, because like you say, they don't get it. But then again, neither would they get Astro Boy, so whatever.
But anyway, yeah, if your a fan there is no way you should skip seeing SOS anyway, this is just one fan to another saying that for me it didn't live up to the last few films.
Bombs vs. bombs, missiles vs. missiles and now a new super weapon to throw upon us all!
Well we're gonna splurge anyway, just for the guys. :wahah:
