I am quite sure there are a lot of Australians here. I really need a native of Australia here in the forums as a subject for an interview. I really need this for my Sociology subject because we are studying culture at this time and our professor asked us to do a project about communicating with people around the world and ask them in forums or in chatrooms about their culture and lifestyle. Please, I really need someone kind enough to lend their time for a little chat about Australian culture. Do not worry, my questions will not be that personal. I'll provide the questions once somebody volunteered. I need at least five interviewees so to all Aussies in this forum please kindly participate in my little project and I'm sure it won't take much from your time. I hope that someone will comply to my simple request. Thanks!
Sorry to jump in here. I am Australian as well and can offer an Answer to that question.
The Funnel Web (the sydney one, "Atrax robustus") is indeed one of the worlds most deadly spiders. It is only found in specific areas and it actually rather rare. It is however common enough to be a real, every day threat to those who may come across it. The Male is the dealy gender. Interestingly enough the venom is actually more dangerous to humans than animals! Fortunately, there IS an antidote and I am reasonably confident that there has not been any deaths due to the funnel web because of the antidote for a very long time.
For a more specific answer to your question.. "I have no idea". Being as that I do not have Pay TV, and possibly never will. (there is an interesting cultural question for you) Therefore I do not know just how bad "the Discovery Channel" makes them out to be
I have never personally seen one even tho I lived in the middle of their habitat for almost 12 years when I was a kid.

three and a half years.. for what?
I've only seen them on TV. They don't live in my state.
There's only been 13 deaths by them, and none since the antivenom was introduced in 1979. A serious bite would take a couple of days to die from.
I've seen a few Discovery Channel documentaries (a friend of mine has been in a few). I find their danger hype to be quite amusing. You know, all those zoom shots and dramatic music. Those things aren't present in real life.
