Ever have someone

Postby tonigirl1000 » 17 years ago

Hi- Thanks, ever have someone ask you to look at something on the internet and they lie to you about the contents? I have, did not appreciate where they sent me, i left from that site as fast as i could. Glad no one at the Astroboy website here would do that. :)  :astro:

I hope you are not talking about those e-mails you receive that tell you there is a nice thing to look at a website? Because if it is, check your computer for viruses

Or those emails that have been going around lately with a subject line of "Hi" or similar that take you to a porn site?

Either way, you really should run a virus scan.

What happen often these days is someone sending me a link on MSN. I receive a message telling me to, for example, "have a look at the photos of both of us on MySpace". The link contains in fact a file, which pretends to be an image, but is in fact an executable (where viruses usually lurk). Last time someone contacted me this way, I sent back a few messages to get confirmation (I didn't doubt it was a scam, as I had never met this person). I then contacted the same person through another channel, and this person confirmed me that he/she had never sent me the messages, and had never received mine in return. This probable meant that a malicious bot had logged on his/her account to send the messages and the virus.
This is the reason why you mustn't trust even people you trust, for the simple reason that they may be impersonated. The best way to be sure is to get a confirmation from the person that a bot couldn't give you (a simple question often does it).

These are useful, but caution is the best. The last virus that I received wasn't detected by my anti-virus. Not that I ever tried to execute it though, I just handed the file to the "cyber-watchdog" just to see if it would detect it :p
