The movie that was released last Wednesday, starring the ever so dashing Nicholas Cage (you may remember him as the voice of Dr. Tenma, lawlerskates), had everything set up around it to be a flop. I mean, it's based on a song? Come on, it has to be bad, right? Well, Rotten Tomatoes thought so, giving it the grim score of 40/100.
What do I have to say to this after seeing the movie? BLASPHEMY! PURE BLASPHEMY!
The movie was fantastic. Period. The special effects were phenomenal, the script was witty and fun, and the actors were great in their roles. I especially liked Alfred Molina as the antagonist Maxim Horvath. You may also recognize the main character David Stutler, played by Jay Baruchel, as the voice behind Hiccup in "How to Train Your Dragon". But seriously, this was a great movie.
One thing I gotta really say I love about this film is the nonchalant-ness of it. It's kinda like Balthazar is saying, "Yeah, it's a giant metal eagle. So what? I'm Nicholas Cage - I can do anything." (Okay, just joking.) Normally that would irritate me, but the way they scripted it in the film made it really funny. The interactions between Balthazar, David and Maxim really creates a vibe that is a mixture of awe, comedy and confrontation of good and evil.
Also, this is a great family film. It's amazing, but the film had absolutely no cursing in it whatsoever, except for the mentioning of the word 'hell', if that counts to any of you. Also, the violence is mainly stylized, fantasy violence, so it's great for the younger kids, too.
I really liked the film. A lot. Out of 10, I'd give it an 8.7. Why not a 9? Because the scene with the exploding baseball was completely absent from the film.
