What's up with Astro's inconsistent shiny spots?

Postby AprilSeven » 15 years ago

Surely you've noticed -- the way Astro is frequently illustrated to show a new-car-shine on his head, his butt and his belt . . . BUT . . . not his face, body or boots. Take a look at the illo of him in the upper left corner of this website (kind of looks like he's in the middle of a sneeze) -- the back of his noggin is reflecting light.

I don't recall this shiny-ness in the movie - or the lightly drawn "joint marks" on his arms or legs. These are the "roboty" things that remind you "he's not 'real'" -- just one of those delectable bits of minutia that would only end up on a site like this (and that's why I love this place so much!).

So whaddayathink?

:tenma: - he uses too much greasy kid stuff (do they even MAKE Brylcreem anymore?)

:astro: - Noooo, No! This was your doing, wasn't it? Call attention to the head and tush. Thanks, Dad!! Nice job!

:hyo: - would you rather have patches, like me?

(Lol sneezing picture, they should him a tissue XD)

I think the shiny spots were to show in drawings that Astro was a robot. Since his pointy hairdo is really metal, having that shine depicts that artificial look. The same could be said for his butt and belt, as the Speedo is part of him and could be made of metal too, (Although often in jokes they come off, but yeah.)

As for the joint lines, in the movie Astro was designed to appear more human than robot. If he was supposed to think he was human and fool others too, (like Tima in Metropolis) then having those joints and a metal scalp wouldn't have worked. But doing so removed the element that Astro was a robot unless his chest plate opened.

Back to shiny, I think...Astro just likes to sparkle, like Edward o_o.

Ratio-active sharks? Oh my. I do believe that you meant to say "radioactive". Honestly, I don't know how such a thing would even work, being ratio-active and all.

Oh, and by the way, in that picture, at least, he looks quite shiny, and all over his form (that is visible to us), too.
