West, TX Explosion :-(

Postby AprilSeven » 13 years ago

Keeping everyone of West, Texas in my prayers and thoughts this morning after learning about the horrific fire and explosion at a fertilizer factory that is said to have basically destroyed everything within 4-5 blocks around it.

I know we have members from TX and also hope you're all safe.

This has been quite a week . . . the Boston bombings, an earthquake in Iran, and now this terrible event.

Time to send out some positive vibes.

And, yeah . . . if :astro: were here, he'd be one busy dude, wouldn't he?

It's truly sad and truly awful. It's hard for me to justify hoping that through all this carnage, that this latest explosion was just an accident and not some tortured soul screaming out at the world. I find myself bugged by wishing that, I feel that it's out of place for the victims. It doesn't matter how it happened, it's awful and horrible and I hope that those who have survived can pick themselves up, dust themselves off and move on without too much weight.

It would be nice to have a super hero in these moments, then again I think that it's in response to things like this that super heroes were born in the first place.

One bad thing after another. I'll be praying extra hard for everyone. I hope they'll be ok!
I really wish superheroes were real.

I hope the paranoid freaks out there don't try to make too much of the West Texas disaster as a terrorist attack. I'm very certain this will turn out to be a criminal act of human negligence combined with deferred maintenance on an aging facility to save money. Whenever a factory deals with large amounts of dangerous materials human error will eventually lead to disaster. It isn't a matter of IF such a factory will blow up, it's a matter of WHEN. Other examples of complacency and negligence leading to disaster were Bhopal India Dec 2, 1984, Chernobyl April 26, 1986, and the near disaster of Three Mile Island in March 28, 1979.

I remember as a teenager living in Brooklyn NY hearing a loud explosion and looking to the west out a window seeing a fireball and mushroom cloud rising from somewhere out in N.J. My first thought was "The Russians dropped the Bomb, but they missed and hit N.J!" (Which actually might not have been a BAD thing .... so much for what New Yorkers think of N.J.!). What actually happened was that an oil cracking plant had blown up. The blast shattered windows as far east as Staten Island.
