ATOM was an acronym for Astro Tech 'O' (something that started with the letter 'o'

, and 'M' (something tahat started with the letter 'm'

The acronym was written vertically, while the words for which it stood were written horizontally:

T
O
M
ASTRO
TECH
etc.
etc.
This was in a scene in episode #1, in which Professor O was giving Tobio a new name. Thus, the Japanes could call him Atom, & the English speakers could call him Astro.
