I didn't know why "Astro" was chosen instead of "Atom". I think "Atom" is a lot more original and distinctive than "Astro". As far as I'm concerned, they might as well go with "Atom" in the next series and I wouldn't mind.

"Astroboy" has become so widely accepted that it's even in the Japanese lyrics of the 80s closing theme.

Likewise, the 2003:
ASTRO
TECH
O SOMETHING OR OTHER
M SOMETHING OR OTHER

I think they could not risk using 'Atom,' becuase so many people are only familiar with 'Astro.' It might cause too much confusion among those people, Mind if we call him "Bruce" to keep it clear?

ATOM was an acronym for Astro Tech 'O' (something that started with the letter 'o' ;) , and 'M' (something tahat started with the letter 'm' ;)

The acronym was written vertically, while the words for which it stood were written horizontally:

A
T
O
M

ASTRO
TECH
etc.
etc.

This was in a scene in episode #1, in which Professor O was giving Tobio a new name. Thus, the Japanes could call him Atom, & the English speakers could call him Astro.

I had seen the "ATOM" acronym, but had not noticed this in the episode, so I didn't understand why you were posting this! :) Thanks.

In the Japanese version, the entire thing is clearly visible; however, (I think) the English version crops the image so that 'Astro' is seen, but 'Atom' is not fully visible.

Here is a screenshot from the first episode of the 2000s, when Dr. O'Shay chooses Astro's name:

Yeah, I think so too because the first thing I saw when I opened this thread was fafner's pic, and I knew which scene you were talking about, and I thought "huh, I've never seen this!".

Thanks fafner! :)

I just checked, and both the English and French versions are cropped. It is basically a small zoom to the upper left corner, so the logo on the right is almost invisible, and the last line "Modality" has disappeared.

:P Looks like they did a kind of Scrabble session while searching for Astro's name.
